Hi, an abscessed tooth has a pocket of pus in the surrounding tissue. When the body tries to fight a bacterial infection, pus forms as product of dead cells and bacteria. Usually, it drains and scar heals. But, if the pus cannot drain, an abscess is formed. If there is an untreated cavity, or gum disease it can lead to development of an abscessed tooth. If the inside of the tooth, the pulp becomes infected it can lead to abscess. In gum disease pockets are formed when gums are pulled away from the teeth. If food builds up in pocket, bacteria can multiply and finally cause an abscess.
