I too have this problem! I had it it about 7 years ago and finally went to the Taste Clinic in Cincinnati, OH. They ran a number of tests and decided that it was a damaged nerve that was sending a constant signal to my tongue that it was tasting salt. They said eventually the nerve would repair itself and the problem would resolve. And, eventually, it did.

But now, seven years later, it is back! I have a feeling it is somehow related to coffee or tea drinking but I can't really substantiate that with any hard proof!

I do not have any other symptons that some others have mentioned on this thread. It is a really frustrating problem.

I have been having the same problem of tasting salt all the time. It began around the same time that I had fillings in my upper teeth. The dentist assured me that it has nothing to do with that. I've been to the docotor and he says that my blood work looks fine. Everyone keeps suggesting that I am pregnant but I am not. It is all very frustrating. The docotor at this point is referring me to an allergist and consulting with a neurologist. I am 25 and have never had problems like this before. My friend suggested it maybe an allegry to aspertain, which can alter your sense of taste. I have tried to eliminate that from my diet as well, with so far no luck. Any suggestions would be wonderful. I'm going crazy! o.O

I too am getting this salty taste, primarily on my tongue and round my lips for several months now and it seems to be getting worse.

I haven't sought medical advice as yet but if anyone can come up with a solution I would be grateful

Hi all, I am having the same problem, its been going on for a while about 2 years now, it comes and goes. I am a 26 year old smoker that loves coffee and wine. I have noticed that when I drink red wine it gets worse, also when I smoke alot it gets worse. When I dont drink enough water it gets worse.

I recommend alot of water, no wine, no smoking, no coffee, salt is not an issue, infact salt helps with the retention of fluids.

Thats bout it

I was experiencing the same problem - which is how I found this site. I was discussing it with my boyfriend and then I noticed later that night the taste had gone away suddenly. Before I was going to bed I put eyedrops in because my contacts had felt dry. Immediately the salty taste had returned! I believe it is from my eyedrops that I had been using pretty frequently. I don't know if this helps anyone but I hope it does!

I started noticing the taste of salt about a week ago. I bought a small bag of jelly beans (I chew on them while driving on road trips) and thought it was odd how salty they tasted, at the next gas stop I bought a new bag and they were the same way. I started paying attention after that and noticed that everything tastes slightly salty, even saliva. My lips and mouth don't seem salty like some comments, mainly just the tongue. I guess I better go have it checked if it doesn't go away soon. Joe.

I would like to know if anyone has an answer to the salty taste problem. I have been having the same problem and my primary care physician doesn't know what the problem is . I am very frustrated and need an answer. I know I am not going crazy and something is wrong. Drinking more water hasn't been helpful.

The main cause of a salty taste in your mouth is dehydration. If you drink at lot of tea or coffee or cola you can be prone to this. Also certain types of medication can cause this taste.

However if the salty taste is combined with heartburn or pains in your upper right chest then it might be GERD, as in acid reflux.

I suffer from GERD myself and have to go and get an operation for it and I suffer from the salty taste all the time now, apparently its quite common with this condition.

See your doctor to be sure.

Hi!
I am a 53 year old woman who has recently started to have the same salty taste in my mouth...it feels like I am eating raw salt, and it seems to be localized in the front of my mouth, tip of tongue and upper and lower lip. I too have had blood tests and seen the dentist...to no avail. Can't find out what is causing this. Anyone have answers??? It has been about a month now and it is driving me crazy!

I have only had this for a few days. But the taste of salt in my mouth is so strong that I had to look it up on the net and this is where I ended up.

After reading all the posts on this thread, I have noticed a common factor.
The following key words keep coming up and they are dehydration, coffee, soda and smoking.

I am a heavy coffee drinker. I wake up with a cup and go to bed with a cup. I drink it all day long. I also have been drinking soda. Previously I had been drinking 1 to 2 large bottles of gatorade everyday. But once the weather turned cold, I just drank coffee. The salt taste is there all the time. But I noticed that it increases while I am having coffeee and smoking a cigerette

I am beginning to believe that I have been drinking to much coffee and not enough fluids like water and gatorade. I am going to cut back on the coffee and do my best to re-hydrate myself. I hope this works, because this constant salt taste is horrible.

If drinking more water and gatorade helps, I will come back to the thread and pass it on.

I am so suprised that I found this page, I have had this exact same problem for months now and have no answers.

In July I had surgery to remove a tumor in my salavary gland, and since have been on alot of meds so I just put it down to that, now they think I have another tumor around the same area so I am waiting on an MRI, but in the mean time this taste is driving me nutts, as all of you stated it doesn't matter what you eat or drink everything is salty tasting...I brush my teeth constantly as I can't stand the taste.

Has anyone found anymore info on this?

If so please post.

OH and NO I have not mentioned it to my Dr's but I am definitely going to now that I see it is just not me.

I just went to the dentist two days ago and I have noticed since the anesthetic wore off I had a "funny taste" in my mouth but now it is very distinguishable that it is a salty taste. And like the other posts it seems to be getting worse. Perhaps when they injected the anesthetic they damaged a nerve? Any answers appreciated.

I have recently consulted my primary care physician who thinks it possible that I could have a yeast problem which is causing everything to taste of salt. He has perscribed liquid Nystatin. So far, 4 days later, no change. Has anyone else had any luck with this treatment?
