Hi all!
I'm 26, I started having salty taste in my mouth about 5 months ago. I read the posts on this thread and was amazed to see that so many people are suffering from the same problem. I don't smoke, don't drink alcohol, don't drink coffee/tea, don't take fish oil pills and I'm not on meds (these are the reasons I saw listed in other posts). I did however have a tooth filling (some other posters mentioned that).
I was searching the internet and I found one post on Yahoo! Answers that suggested a "Sjogren's Syndrome" (SHOW-grin). I looked it up and I do have most of the symptoms. I'm going to see a doctor regarding that. Here is the link for the Yahoo! post answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvMOPJkSwXQY3_Rkd1uqvo8jzKIX?qid=20061101203952AATOXtW

Hope that helped.

Hi,
Like a previous post, I also found that taking a particular brand of fish oil caused the salty taste in my mouth. My question is, I take fish oil regularly for reducing cholesterol. So, is there a brand of fish oil that you know that does not cause the salty taste? Thanks.

the fish oil has nothing to do with the salty taste. i wish it was that cut and dry. i'm still searching. 4years and getting worse.

I've had the salty taste for about a month. It's only on the right side of my tongue, never on the left. Comes and goes.

My dentist doesn't have a clue what it it, but my doctor said something about bacteria, I think, and told me to use toothpaste with zinc. Seems to work :)

I amazed so many people experience this and nobody knows the actual cause. I started experiencing this about 2 months ago after having a really bad chest and head cold. Currently taking medicine for acid reflux. No help. Might be a remaining sinus infection from the cold I had. Going back to the doc next week. Whatever it is, it's becoming a real pain to deal with. Coughing all the time, sour stomach and just plain worn out by days end. I post something if I find a cure.

This is just plain odd. I am 56 and just within the last two weeks I have had this feeling of puffyness in my lymph below my jaw. I was looking as it seems are a lot because in the last five days I have noticed that I have really salty tasting lips and teeth or tongue. it is hard to blame one or the other completely. I just had dental work done- a crown and oddly that tooth is the saltiest. Since I used to love salt it hasn't gotten totally annoying yet but if I find any answers I will certainly post them.
For now though a simple question:
How many people in this group have fluoridated water?
all - none - or just some
I won't outright blame flouridation because I have been systematically been trying to remove it from my diet for other reasons.
I was just curious since such poisening can cause salivation problems.
Of course the flouride people will tell you that it has to be in larger doses than what goes into the water, but I do know that when facilities use chlorine it often is the case that someone over chlorinates. OOPS.
Just a question though- no science behind the thought.
aside:
I have recently been exposed to an open bag of rocksalt that has been there for three years (at work) no one else has these symptoms but since I spoke to them they have all tackfully steered clear of me today. after reading up today, I tossed the salt out.
There really have been no changes in my life, diet, habits and I take only one alergy medicine though I take several vitamins but again nothing has changed. My wife does not taste the salt on my lips, but I do.

I too have the same thing, for about 3 weeks now. Constant salty taste in my mouth mainly tip of tongue and lips, little bumps on my tongue and my eyes feel like they burn sometimes. My Dr. tells me I should go see a shrink, isn't that nice of her. It's not in my head it's in my mouth! I am calling her and telling her to give me a referall to an ENT. If anyone has any suggestions please tell.

I just read the posts on salty mouth and am glad to know I am not the only one! I have had this going on for 5 weeks and am miserable. It DOES feel like someone has poured salt in my mouth..and my saliva is watery. I was prescribed Zegerid and thought sure that was the culprit so stopped it almost two weeks ago and it still persists. I do not drink coffee, tea, alcohol, sodas and DO drink a lot of water. I have not had recent dental work and have even been tested for Sjcorgen's (sp?) and do not have that. I went to an ENT and he was mystified. Today I went to another doctor who feels sure it is a sinus infection, even though I have had no stuffiness, no gunk. I am hoping the antibiotics will work as I cannot go on like this! Maybe we can all find a common link!

Hi,
I have had this salty taste in my mouth for close to 2 months. It gets very bad when I eat sweet foods. All I taste is salt. Since I am an RN, I have been asking the Docs at the hospital what they think it is. They all start out with possible dehydration or side effect of medication. So far, no one can really say why this is happening. I do suffer from GERD and allergies, but have never experienced anything like this before. I feel healthy otherwise. But what a pain this is!!!

A little bit of salt taste in the mouth is normal especially for many of you who are supplementing with various things. Some posts however which describe a constant chronic salt taste is very likely caused by nerve damage somewhere in the mouth. Have you had a root canal or fillings lately? Your doctor may want to first rule out brain problems such as tumours but don't be alarmed this is very rare. For these people anyways drinking more water or cutting out coffee won't work. Don't search for every possible cause and change your lifestyle. I hope this helps!

This seems bang on to me and I guessed it myself. Then I talked to a Dr. and she mentioned that yes there is a nerve that's associated with taste that you can injure. Along with my very sore neck I can tell i've damaged a nerve because of arm tingling. If I were you guys I would check into nerve damage too. I have bone spurs (arthritis) in my neck and just a wrong twist and I can anger this nerve.

Thank god i'm not the only one with salty mouth. People thought I was crazy...ok, crazier.

I have a question and I know it's a little odd, but I was just curious. If we can taste the salt, then if you kiss someone can they taste it on you too? I was just wondering cause I met someone and I am afraid to even kiss him!! I'm afraid he'll be like "ill, she tastes like salt"!!!

I am wondering if it is my toothpaste or perhaps a new ingredient in my toothpaste causing the problem. I also think drinking too much coffee and/or salt might be related. definitely annoying.

[thank goodness I`ve found this site, and know i`m not alone in this problem. I had a new denture made 5 months ago and i`ve had trouble in my mouth ever since. swellings underneath my tongue, which seem to go down if i leave them out for a few days, which i hate i end up looking like granny grey. THE SALTY TONGUE SYNDROME is pretty recent maybe a week now but like you all it is driving me potty. i do take an asprin a day so i`m going to stop for a few days and see if it helps also try changing my tooth paste.
I`m visiting the dentist tomorrow, may be he can throw some light on the subject. I`ll let you know :
