Hello, I have a question concerning my friend. He is HIV positive and I know that his immune system is weakened. Fungal infections are quite common for him. For a while he had that infection in the mouth area. He was under some therapy and the infection subdued. I would like to know What is the efficacy of available antifungal agents: nystatin formulations, clotrimazole?

Antifungal agents could be used for entire system and only for local area too. Local agents work on the skin level by attaching themselves to the membrane of fungus cells and destroy them. Nystatin cannot be absorbed in intestines and is most suited to cure fungal infection in mouth area. Clotrimazole is very toxic and it is used only for local areas.
