My husband has cancer. He is going to chemotherapy but he doesn't tolerate it too well. He has serious attacks of nausea and vomiting every time after the chemotherapy. Doctor has realized that something must be done. He is prescribed with Ondansetron as a therapy. What is the mechanism of Ondansetron?

Well, its mechanism of action is not fully characterized. It is selective 5-HT3 antagonist. It is not quite certain is antiemetic action mediated centrally, peripherally or both. Cytotoxic chemotherapy seems to be associated with release of serotonin from the cells of the small intestine. Released serotonin cause vomiting reflex. Ondansetron prevents it.
