In my humble opinion take any other prescribed sleeping aid other than valium. As they do the trick butthey do become very addictive quickly. I share this through experience. I had a long battle with diazepam. Withdrawals are extremely difficult to cope with as they just cover the initial problem. Good luck

I have to say that Phenergan is often used as a sleep aid and for aggression in psychiatric wards. I have taken Zopiclone, lorazepam and diazepam for sleep and they did absolutely nothing. They just don't work on me and have the effect of making me more wound up which is often the case with people with personality disorders (I have BPD) as it lowers impulse control.

The best nights sleep I have had has been with mirtazapine (lower dose paradoxically has a greater effect on sleeping). But this is only for the first couple of weeks and then it wears off. I am taking Phenergan now and it is totally awesome. Best sleep drug I have ever had. Works every night almost without fail. Plus it may be an antihistamine (which accounts for its sleepiness effects) but it is also a weak antipsychotic.

Temazepam is a benzodiazepine, and one of the more abused and addictive ones too. The Brand name is Restoril in the U.S. It does work well for sleep, though.

Temazepam is also a benzodiazapine and not safe for long term. Nothing is really safe but neither is long term suffering from insomnia. It's a risk/benefit decision

Temazepam is a benzodiazepine, just like valium, they are both equally safe.

As a pharmacist, I would just like to point out some things about these medications that you guys have mentioned:
-Diazepam/Valium
is benzodiazepine and is addictive and habit forming. It also takes a long time for your body to metabolise (I believe its half life is between 20 and 150 hours, depending on dose and strength). It's best for if you want to fall asleep and keep asleep, but don't mind the drowsy-like feeling you'll experience for the next few hours. Rx med so use only on the advice of a doctor and, once again, it IS ADDICTIVE. Overdose will lead to trembling, change in consciousness, and irregular breathing. Might lead to loss in muscle strength. Generally one of the stronger drugs you shouldn't really self-medicate on. Must emphasize addictiveness.
-Zolpidem/Ambien
is generally metabolised within 2-4 hours but is fast acting and takes around 10 minutes to start working. Depending on what type (e.g. if extended release) and what dose, this is generally a less "severe" medication, and doesn't have many of the addictive side-effects of diazepam. However, as I've been told, it can cause extended drowsiness and dizziness and hallucinations. Will get you to sleep and maintain sleep quality for the first few hours. Overdose causes irregular breathing and heart rate. Not the best for some people as it can sometimes cause excitability instead of sleepiness as well as hallucinations.
-Promethazine/Phenergan
Antihistamine which is pharmacist only where I live and is Rx in the US (as far as I know). You should generally try this first as it has the least side effects and generally doesn't cause too much drowsiness the next day. Also has anti-nausea properties, so that might be suitable for travellers. I would say it's best for light sedation, but will help you stay asleep. Not as strong as other drugs mentioned here, but generally has lesser risk. Overdose may cause pupil dilation, shakiness, and over-reactive reflexes. Max 50mg. Generally the drug I have the most experience with, and again, I would suggest trying promethazine first before using zolpidem or diazepam.
-Doxylamine Succinate
In US's NyQuil, generally very safe in correct doses and concs. Not much to comment on. Best for light sedation.
-Homeopathic remedies
Herbal medicines
Unproven OTC drugs
Placebo at best, dangerous at worst (reactions with prescriptions possible). If you're looking for an effective sleep aid, this won't be the solution.
