I have had very bad symptoms of PMS in the past - the worst being breast tenderness. I tried Yasmin and that may have been too much estrogen for me so now I have been on Yaz for as few months. After getting used to it (and a little extra emotional) for a couple of months, my PMS symptoms have subsided and my period is very light, short and with minimal cramps. The doctor did say that it usually takes at least 3 months to regulate and after that, that would be pretty much how you'll feel on that pill. Good luck!

I just started taking Yaz and the only side effect that I have had is severe nausea for about 3 hours. Other than that -- I feel like Yaz really "took the edge off" of me. I am taking it due to too much Testosterone and hair growth in not-so-nice places. Yaz is different due to the fact that it contains a Test-Blocker (that I forget how to spell). Before Yaz, it was like I was on steroids all the time and angry. Now, I feel more like the lady that I am.

I found out about Yaz from reading a book "It's Your Hormones" that was written by an endocrinologist. It has been an invaluable book for me and if you are having hormone problems -- I would suggest educating yourself about the different hormones and problems associated with different levels of each one. I used to think that Estrogen was the enemy until I read this book. I then went and discussed what I had read with my doctor. I cannot afford to go see the doctor that wrote the book -- so, I had to go to a regular doctor.

Hope that this helps someone out there and best of luck balancing yourselves out :-)

I take the Yaz pill and haven't had problems. I read through all the posts by others and was wondering if they were just given Yaz by their doctors without testing their Testosterone levels.

"YAZ contains 3 mg of the progestin drospirenone that has
antimineralocorticoid activity, including the potential for hyperkalemia
in high-risk patients, comparable to a 25 mg dose of
spironolactone." --Yaz Prescription Information

Spironolactone acts as a testosterone blocker. 25 mg is a small dose, but if you don't have extra Testosterone to spare, this could be where some women are having problems.

Before getting prescriptions for OCs... you should read about each one and get hormone levels tested. I knew that I had too much Testosterone and therefore this pill was beneficial for me.

Too much testosterone causes:

Male hair growth patterns
Baldness
Weight Gain (or the inability to lose weight)
Anger/Mood Swings

All of this is discussed in a book that I read by an endocrinologist called "It's Your Hormones" and I would suggest any women to read it. Based on what I have learned I have been able to help improve my hormone "mess" and I feel like myself again.

Hi,

Just read all the negative posts @ Yaz--went for my yearly checkup today and was inquiring about starting up on bc again. My CRNP recommended Yaz and my pharmacist said alot of women take it and he doesn't hear any complaints ... I used to take OTC (and took OTC lo for a while and just thought it did nothing for my acne & heavy flow) and found it made me "blue" all month--not quite depressed, but close. But my PMS mood symptoms were lighter overall. I do think I suffer from mild PMDD--my depression, anxiety, irritability around my period has been very bad since I was a teenager (I'm 29 now). I've even seen psychologists about this. People joke about PMS, but I literally feel like I have the flu around my period and will scream at people and become irritable instantly--I've even felt hopeless many, many times. Crying every month is a given.

I'm wondering if the women who hated Yaz would say they were looking for a bc that controls psychological symptoms? It sounds like this can be a good choice for those looking primarily to control their depression, etc. while having a bc option. Maybe not a drug for those looking for just bc?? Also read that spironolactone acts similar to Yaz--I took that years ago for my acne (which is much better, but still not totally clear skin--another reason I want to go back on the pill) and spironolactone worked wonders for me.

Any feedback would be helpful--thanks!

I have been taking it for a month and had a lot of mood swings, I am an emotional person but not that much. I was put on this for low sex drive, hair loss, and to help my skin. my doctor thinks it will help %-) . I do not have to be on birth control, so am unsure to keep going. I need to get my hormones balanced, but there must be another way?... anyone know? thanks

Hello, I too have just switched to YAZ after being on Yasmine for 2yrs. I have just finished my first pack and am awaiting the start of my period. So far, its about 3 days later than my normal cycle and doesn't seem to be making an appearance. I switched after I asked my Doctor about it and he stated that both of his daughters were on it. I too have flu like symptoms with my cycle and extra growth of facial hair. After, reading all of the comments posted, I am kinda scared to continue taking YAZ. I started reading the forums to see if anyone else has had weight gain. I feel very bloated and like I've gained 10lbs already!! My face has broken out too and Im 31yrs old!! Im going to take my second pack and if it doesn't subside, I will go back to Yasmine.

Yea so I've been on Yaz, just for 2 weeks granted, but I feel fine> The only side effect so far is my breasts are a little sore. Nothing unbearable though. The first week I noticed minor nausea for a bit after taking my pill, but then it subsided. My eating habits have not changed, Im eating no more and no less.

Feel like Im taking a placebo. Meh I dunno, maybe my body takes to meds better.

Here's keeping my fingers crossed this keeps up!

Hello, I have been on YAZ since Nov 2006. I am 38 years old. I really like this pill. The only complaint I have is low sex drive. Every pill I ever took I had a low sex drive plus wild mood swings and painfull breasts. But since I have been on YAZ my mood is even. My periods are very light. (which is why I take the pill) my periods used to be very heavy and I had a uterine polyp. I was told I need to take BC to control my heavy flow. I just wish my sex drive would return. I know if I stop taking the pill it will return but I do not want to have the heavy periods again too. I suggest anyone taking this pill stick to a strick time schedule when taking this pill. I noticed after the first few months I had break through bleeding but when I started taking it on time things evened out.
Hope this was helpful.

I was reading about inactive pills and wound up here. I used to very rarely cry, and I've gotten to where sometimes I cry and I don't even know why. I started taking yaz right around the time that I got a boyfriend, and I never feel like having sex and never manage to 'get there'. I've just figured something was wrong with me or something. I've never thought that it might be attributed to the pills, but now you've got me curious. I like that it's lightened my periods and that my doctor suggested only having one every three months, and *definitely* do not want to become pregnant. I don't know anything about other kinds of birth control and if they make you feel the same way? Don't know what to do about it though...

So I started taking Yaz almost a year ago. For a long time now Ive been severely depressed, severe anxiety, and have had mood swings so bad that Im nearly convinced Im bipolar. I have ABSOLUTELY no desire for sex, in fact ive come to hate it, and it hurts. Ive always been sort of depressed off and on throughout my life due to other things and some other stuff has happened to me that might cause me to not have any sexual desire, but never thought that it could be contributed to my birth control! Now that I sit here and think about when I really started feeling as bad as Ive been feeling, it was around the time I started taking Yaz. Its my 3rd bc in the last 4 years, the first was lo- overal and the second was yasmin, and I dont remember feeling this badly while taking either of those. Im going to request a switch ASAP!

I just went to the ER last night after having difficulty breathing. My heart also felt "funny" on and off for the past couple of days. I started YAZ last wednesday and I have a feeling that this birthcontrol pill is not good for women. I hate it. The doctor at the ER thought I was having a panic attack, and I told him that I was not having one, even though I've had one before and know what they are like. Dumb ass doctor. Love our healthcare system!

I also read about the increase in potassium, and other posts on this websight... doesn't sound like a safe birth control.

I think that PMDD is a very questionable diagnosis that the drug companies are using to promote thier new drugs, including YAZ.

I have just started taking Yaz last month, and it is going fine for me. The last pill I was on was Aviane and I had some serious mood swings on that pill. I was getting over a long-term relationship and dating a new person and I thought that it was just the stress of that situation. I would write in my journal when I was upset, and then one time I looked back and noticed that for three months in a row it was happening exactly at the same time, and that this crying and hopeless feeling was just not my normal self. The Yaz has been fine so far. I felt a little dizzy the first week, and I think it was due to the diuretic in the pill - it has been hot and I'm a runner and needed to drink more water. On three occasions in a row I had trouble having an orgasm which had not been a problem for me in the past. I fully agree with the post above that mentions the fact that everyone's body and life are different. Stress, anxiety, job, family stuff can all affect our physical side more than we realize. In the past I have been less patient to wait out the three month adjustment time, but this time I am going to stick it out.

i took yaz for eight months. i went from being a lively, funny person, to someone who couldn't handle stress. i'd freak out, and my heart would start racing when a difficult situation would come up. my BF couldn't do anything right. i cried all the time, and started questioning whether or not i was where i needed to be in life, in regards to school/relationship/work, etc...

I hated the breakthrough bleeding the most. I would have about 14 miserable days of weird, light bleeding. I went to a new doc, and she said bleeding at the end of a pill pack means i am not getting enough progesterone. Yaz uses a new, experimental synthetic progesterone, so she put me on a new pill. same dose as yaz, but no synthetic progesterone.

so, three weeks ago, i switched to Portia. My life has taken a drastic change for the better. My BF wants to spend time w/me again, and my quick wit is back.

i hate yaz. i love portia.

First of all, I'd just like to say that I HATE YAZ! I've been on it for three months and I feel like I am bipolar. I freak out on my boyfriend all of the time for no reason...I have had a headache everyday, my period comes unexpected every month and I am having trouble with spotting. I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo but switched to Yaz in hopes of preventing mood swings, now they are MUCH worse. I am going back to Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo next week, I was on it for almost 4 years and didn't have problems. Oh, my poor boyfriend!!

I have been on Yaz for 1 1/2 months. I hate it!!! Have had break through bleeding, spotting, sore breasts, no sex drive, cramps, depression, having crazy thoughts, fatigue, very heavy period ( lasted 16 days!). I am stopping this pill tonight!!! I was put on it to regulate my period and help straighten out my hormones. I would rather have my irregular periods than take this garbage!
