My 16 year old step daughter has been experiencing severe stomach pains off and on for the last few weeks. In addition to the stomach pains which at times have her doubled over she complains of body aches in her joints. She is not running fever.

Last year about this time, she was diagnosed as lactose intolerant and acid reflux. There are some concerns about Irritable Bowel Syndrome being a possibility.

She was taken to her primary doctor a couple of weeks ago where she saw a nurse practitioner.

Here is what has been done so far:

1. Bloodwork.
2. Ultrasound of the gall bladder
3. Stool samples have been collected and sent to the lab - no results yet
4. Upper and lower GI. Biopsies taken. Doc said all looked good during the procedure but will wait on pathology reports to confirm.
5. Next week (Tuesday 12/18) she will swallow a pill with a camera in it and carry a device that will record what the camera sees. The camera will be passed out of the body naturally.
6. There is another test scheduled for Christmas eve.

Sometimes she is up and about and looks and feels "just fine". Other times (usually night time - early morning) she is in pain. Because of this situation she is unable to attend schoold.

The situation is being "owned" at the present time by a gastrointerologis (SP). She is seeing the nurse practitioner on 12/14.

Question: Might it be a good idea at this point to involve an Internist? Or - maybe even an OB/GYN?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
