After having undiagnosed type B strep for over 8 years and living with swollen tonsils, white bumps, sore throats and ear aches year after year I am having my tonsils removed. I am 28 and I am very nervous. I am not nervous about the surgery – I will be, I’m not thinking about it right now – I am nervous about the pain and potential complications after.
I have been told that Amoxicillin is the antibiotic of choice I am allergic to it. I was also told that they give you Prednisone which I am also allergic too. What will happen there?
I am petrified of taking strong pain killers for various reasons. I am very sensitive to drugs in general and am terrified of taking them. I know this sounds stupid but it’s true. I can take antibiotics and if needs be a Motrin but I am terrified of taking something like Oxicotton (spelling?) or something along those lines. My sister is a drug addict and she loves taking prescription meds and I am terrified of being ‘high’ or out of control. I once took Nyqill and had an awful reaction including hallucinations.
Has anyone been though this? I know I sound stupid and I will do as the doctors tell me but I am petrified. I have been reading all these posts about taste lost, bleeding, losing 20lbs, large scabs hanging down your throat. I am very senditive and to be quite honest a bit of a wimp when it comes to stuff like this.

I am allergic to amoxicillan too!! The posts are pretty right on, it is a painful recovery but will be well worth it in the end!! I had mine out exactly a year ago when I was 28 and I can tell you to take the pain meds religiously, you will need them!! If you let the pain get going it will be harder to get under control, so stay on top of it!! The surgery for me went fine, no complications, but you have to remember that adults do not heal like children and it will take time.
Around day five or six of recovery you will feel like your world is coming to an end, this is the time your scabs are coming off, be prepared...then it is over, you will really start to feel better!! If you need some really indepth tips let me know and I will post some addtional info! Like keep a cool mist humidifier going, it helps keep your mouth moist, ice chips are a great thing, ice packs for around your neck really help with swelling, sleeping sitting up will be a god send, I could go on, but only if you request:) I spent alot of time ont his site before my surgery and during recovery, it helped with the tears and I felt liek someone was with me!
I have been strep free for a year and am loving it!! It will be worth it, especially with being allergic to antibiotics, you will thank yourself later:)
Let me know if you need my notes and good luck:)
