Hi. I've been receiving emails from this site, over the last couple of months, so thought I would come and see what is being said. I am the Original Poster by the way!! :)

I must have created this post about 6 years ago, as I am now 24. I can't believe it is still popular and being used.

Little about myself

Since I was last on here, I am now on 100mg a day of Levothyroxine and have gained 4 stone. About 2 years ago I lost around 2 stone through walking, but have since gained it all back. I am now on a calorie counting diet, of around 1500 a day and I do cardio 3 times a week, and I also use the Kettlebell - which is a great workout btw. I started all of this in January of this year, after finding a site called Myfitnesspal - Welsh89 if anyone uses it and would like to add me. Its a site where you can log everything you eat and drink throughout the day, and also keep track of the amount of sodium, sugar, etc you consume. From using the site and app, and also watching my portion size I have lost 15 pounds, although it has been a very long and slow process.

I read through all of your posts and you have all contributed some really useful information, and from doing this I found out that all the foods that are healthy and supposed to be good for me, are actually bad. i.e. Broccoli, Spinach, Strawberries, Pasta, etc. I eat these all the time! What I didn't find through reading is why these foods are bad for me, or maybe it has been said but I missed it.

So yeah that's me! :)

Thank you for all the replies. I definitely have found all of this very useful.

I have had Hashimotos thyroid since 97 and had the weight gain and then my dr told me not to eat anything white no potatoes nothing made with any kindof flour no sugar  no rice and I have lost my weight and feel great and do not eat anything with soy. I use lettuce wraps for a sandwich and it works well

You didn't mention how old you were. Given that you recently had a baby, I'd guess that you're definitely not menopausal or post-menopausal; if you were, that would definitely add a whole different, difficult and negative aspect to your weight loss. Add in fibromyalgia, chronic pain and opioid medication and this plan would go out the window! It may work for those with simple hypothyroidism but combined with the above issues (and a number of others I don't have room to mention!), and success would be difficult to impossible to achieve.

A gluten free diet may be the trendy thing to do right now but it doesn't make any difference if you have multiple other health problems besides just hypothyroidism. You dropped 15 pounds--have you continued to lose weight. I need to lose about 150 lbs. After a new doc decided I didn't really need Synthroid, I started putting on weight. For 8 months, I BEGGED to be put back on my medicine, all the while putting on the pounds while the doc told me it was just all because of how much I must be eating (which, according to the nutritionist I saw, was a grand total of 1200 calories a day.) Ninety pounds later, she finally did a simple TSH which was through the roof. Without a word of apology, explanation or discussion, her office called and said there was a prescription for Synthroid waiting for me at my pharmacy. I immediately made an appointment with an endocrinologist who was disgusted with my doc and sympathetic to my situation but who regretfully held out little hope that, given all my health issues, I would ever be able to now lose the weight. I'm now in a different state and have a great doc who's willing to try anything to help me; unfortunately, I'm finding that the endocrinologist was right.

Hi! I have hypothyroidism too. I'd put on what I felt was a lot of weight and was frustrated because I couldn't lose it. My doctor and cardiologist suggested I try the Medifast diet, also known as the Take Shape For Life Plan, when I asked for their suggestions. I lost 70 lbs. in less than a year. This diet is a soy based, high protein, low carbohydrate, and low fat diet. You eat 5 of their 90-110 calorie meals and one lean and green meal, spacing each of your meals to 2-3 hours apart. Their foods are tasty and easy to use if traveling or on vacation. You can even cheat once in a while and still lose weight, as well as reduce your cholesterol. (I went to Ihop once a month with the girls and an occasional dinner out, that included cake and wine, with my family or friends.) These foods can be obtained on-line or through a Medifast coach, if you choose to use one. Due to hypothyroidism's weight gaining curse, I would suggest that when you're ready for the transition and later, maintanance portion of this diet plan, you continue to have two of their packaged meals and alter their plan accordingly, in order to avoid regaining weight. I absolutely would not reccommend this diet for anyone who has had an estrogen based cancer because it is a soy based diet . However, if this isn't a concern for you, this diet works!! But, check with your doctor to get his/her okay.

I have hypothyroidism since ive been 16 I have gained a lot of weight. I don't eat very much but I seem to keep putting on weight. I heard that using gugglesterones which is a multi vitamin can help along with taking your meds every day. I take 125 mcg.

"The Raw Food Detox Diet" by Natalia Rose will teach you about nutrition for your body. Substitute kale with non-goitrogenic greens. Add selenium to your diet and do not add iodine in supplement form but DO eat sea vegetables 3x/week.

All of you please read Mary J Shonom's book "The Thyroid Diet"  She has been an advocate of Hyperthyroidism for years and has written 10 books.  Another book is "Living Well with Hypothyroidism".  I would not have the life I live now, if I hadn't read her books and made them a part of my life.  They have helped me tremendously.

Hi, I have been hypo for past 8 years and I am taking 150 mcg of thyoxine. I did my workouts and different diets but couldn't seem to shed off the weight. However, keeping off gluten might help. It might be slow but it works. I lost 5 lbs in 3 months.. good protein, dairy (yogurt and cottage cheese) and gluten free food helps.

Ladies - I'm sorry to burst your bubble. It is impossible to loose weight when you have hypo. Were all screwed!!!!!
No - you cannot lose one pound as I have tried as well. NOTHING works. I know this sounds vain. I am now in the process to have liposuction. I hate the way my body looks. I have suffered from horrific depression. Now my eyes have the
BULGING effect and my vision has terribly been affected. Always tired. Speech is slow. Extreme brain FOG.
Yes - there are foods to illuminate and exercise is not working for me. I don't eat much and the pounds keep
coming on.

My wife as hypo, syndriod makes it worse and has no effect, and causes hair loss, what you need is naturethroid which is a supplement and not a synthetic drug.
