I'm 27 years old and lately I have been experiencing strange pain in the pubic area, also my periods happen two times a month with more bleeding than usual, and most of the time I have a strange gray discharge from my vagina. Also most of the times when having sex I'm experiencing pain and sometimes I even bleed. All of this started happening after I started using contraceptive diaphragm, during the time when my boyfriend used condoms I was pretty much ok. What could be the cause of this and what’s the treatment?

There are many possible causes of the described symptoms. You probably have some kind of a vaginal or uterine infection, vaginitis or cervicitis. There is more chance that you may have cervicitis since you mentioned that you are using diaphragm for contraception. Since diaphragms are placed on the outer side of the cervix they can cause irritation of the cervix and local inflammation which can get complicated if bacteria or some fungi that usually cause STD’s get on the cervix, which probably happened in your case. You said that you had periods twice in one month, but those were probably just heavy bleedings between real periods caused by cervicitis. Cervicitis is usually treated with wide spectrum antibiotics. You should talk to your general practitioner or gynecologist for further treatment and guidance.

A grey discharge is a common symptom of gardinella vaginosis. I have experienced the same symptoms and I was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis that caused the cervicitis ...which led to symptoms like the cervical pain and bleeding or spotting after sex. The cause was having sex without using a male condom. I suggest that you get tested for BV and if that is the case, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics. Take precautions such as taking a shower before sex, and making sure that your partner wears a condom each time. Bacterial vaginosis is not an std, its just that some women get an imbalance of bacteria after intercourse... in some cases because of the disruption of ph levels that is caused by semen.
