Hi, I’m hoping someone can offer me any advice on what to do since I don’t know what else to do to get rid of the constipation. I’ve been suffering from GERD for years, but only after I got a second opinion from different GI doctor, I was diagnosed with achalasia. I was suffering from random chest pains that made me think heart attack and food regurgitation for years which were all caused by achalasia, not GERD. I’m scheduled to have dilatation of my lower esophagus which I hope will help with nausea and food coming back up. All this time I’ve been terribly constipated and now I’m at the point where laxatives barely help at all and even when they do, bowel movements are so painful I once actually fainted. I’ve mentioned this to my GI doctor and he wants me to have a colonoscopy, but didn’t really give me any answer if treating achalasia will help at all with the constipation.

Achalasia has to do with a disorder of your esophagus so your constipation issue would not be related to that.  A colonoscopy will determine if you have anything that could be causing the constipation, see if you have polyps, or a blockage. Have you been eating differently of recent days?  If you are not drinking enough fluid or eating a lot of roughage, you could be bound up because of your diet.  Take time to examine your eating habits.  If you believe you have been eating about the same, it would behoove you to have the colonoscopy to rule out any other factors.
