After a lot of general problems menacing my health, when my family persuaded me that it had got something to do with my abuse of alcohol, I decided to do several liver tests. It happened that I had moderately elevated ALT and ALP enzymes. What is it supposed to mean, could it be a sign of cirrhosis? I am 68 years old.

Hello, I am about your age; I had also problems with the quantity of these enzymes. According to what my doctor told me, it seems that the level of ALP is often increased due to the age. It has perhaps nothing to do with any liver disease, because even healthy people of our age can carry that excess without harm. While in the case of ALT, I can only recommend you to do also a GGT and AST test, and compare everything. If GGT level is normal, I think that means that the liver is not infected; but if AST level is also elevated – my case: it was three times higher than ALT – the cause is alcohol or problems with the bile.
