Hi, I'm 49 years old and I have frequent headaches that won’t leave me alone. I went to my doctor a dozen times but he says it’s nothing and that he can't find any cause for my headaches. But the headaches just wouldn’t stop so I kept on coming. Once he said I was too worried about my health, that I'm fine and that I'm hyprecondriac. Could my headaches be something really serious and what does the word hypercondriac really mean and why is it used in the context of a patient who’s worrying too much about his health?

Well first of all most people misspell the word “hypochondriac”, or mishear it as hypercondriac, which basically doesn’t mean anything. I will try to explain what the word hypochondriac means, because I suppose we both think of the same term. The word hypochondriac is an adjective used in medicine and human anatomy to mark the area of upper abdomen which is positioned laterally just underneath the lower edge of the thoracic cage (rib cage), on both right and left sides. It corresponds on the right to the kidneys, liver and gull bladder, and on the left side stomach and the left kidney can be found in that area. The term itself is used in the context of hypersensitive patient because in the past most people with “fake” diseases sensed the pain in hypochondriac areas of the abdomen. The term is first used early in the 18-th century and it has been used to mark patients that are convinced that they are ill although there are no objective symptoms of any disease, no matter where the reported symptoms are. I can't judge whether your doctor is right about your headaches or not, but if you don’t feel confident in your doctor’s judgment or diagnosis he gave you maybe it’s the best that you change your doctor and ask for a second opinion about the matter.

Please do not worry about your headaches too much. Being a hypochondriac myself (as I'm told), i know what you're going through. I'm always convinced that I have a disorder or I'm going to go crazy or something silly. Being a Hypochondriac means that you simply feel that you are going to get a horrible illness, and then your mind starts to play "Tricks" on you. You actually do feel pain, but this is merely due to the fact that you are thinking about your health too much.
A common factor, which contributes to being a hypochondriac is stress. If you're going through stress at the moment, it would be a good idea to just sit back and relax.
REMEMBER: It's all in the mind, and if you can stop thinking about having an illness, you will be able to overcome anything. :-)
If your symptoms do persist I would recommend you to visit another GP, and tell him/her about your experiences, and other illnesses you've had (make sure you mention what your other doctor has said). You can be treated for being a hypochondriac, but if you do not wish to take medication, visit a psychologist and they can help you to overcome your disorder.
Good luck for the future!

hi guys i have only just signed up to this site and ive not a clue how to get myself started proper and i cant start my own new topic, so i hope you dont mind me saying how i feel on here.
im a 17 year old student and im not sure if im a hypercondric or if i have anxiety and depression. im too scared to speak with my local doctor as i dont want anything going down on record that i suffer from anything as im worried i will find it hard to get a job if people know what i suffer from.
well....ive spoken with my mum and she thinks im a hypercondric, but she aint no doctor. i would like to have some professional advice on what you think is wrong with me.
ok...symptons. i fell nervous most of the time and i constantly feel sick or its just in my head, im not sure. for example i feel sick and nervous in places im used to such as schools, local hair shop, town and even with my mum just traveling around.
i try to deal with this in my own way. however im not sure im going about it correctly or not. last night i booked a hair cut and as i went to bed i started to feel sick in my stomach and i was imagaining myself feeling sick at the hair shop (stupid i know, but i cant help it), and as i woke up this morning i thought 'oo no hair cut' and started to feel nervous and sick again.
to be honest with you i am under weight and i dont eat enough as im scared of being sick. also im not sure im eating the right foods. at the moment im taking St. John Warts to help me. i have felt like this for 10 weeks now and im worried about not going back to college.
i really dont want this to stop me from being who i am
please can you help
thankyou

Hi paula i know this will sound stuipd me trying to help you when i need it too. all i could suggest is you could try what i do however you are much older than me. im taking my mum with me to college to enrole just to feel less nervous and sick. you could take a freind with you to somewhere where you feel these headaches most just to see if there is any improvements and just to make you take your mind off you headache as you will be with someone close. my mum has headaches alot and she takes paracetamol and the doctor told her that it could be counterproductive and making it worse.

Hi there, but when you have hypochonria, it's an anxiety disorder. It's something you have to be aware of, and it does make things harder. It sounds to me like you have an anxiety issue, especially with canceling your appointment. What are you doing now about it? Have you seen a doctor?

A word of friendly advice from someone who has struggled with this for awhile--it gets worse. But it only gets worse if you don't get help. You can't solve it all yourself. And getting help from a therapist can really give you a lot of insight. SO bear that in mind, okay? I have struggled with this for a lot of years, and it really did come to an end when I got help. So please consider that, okay? Facing your fear is the best way to do it, but having a therapist to help you figure it all out really does help!
