I am 18 years old girl and I want to solve my weight problem. Actually, I don’t even know if I have weight problem, since my all friends are really thin. That’s why sometimes I feel overweight, though my parents told me I am normal. That’s why I need some explanation before I start with diet. How could I know if I am normal and what is an appropriate body weight, or maybe I am a little over weight?

There is no agreed upon simple to answer to your question, because there are a number of standards used. For example there is a weight chart that provides and expected weight depending on height, age and gender. However, these are of limited value, because they don’t take into account the large differences between people in terms of genetic and related factors that determine what appropriate body weight is. Weight is just like most other physical features which vary naturally among people. It’s possible to make small changes in your body weight, but when it is pushed too far, the body tries to make biological adjustments to get back to its more natural weight. It is known that people with anorexia nervosa usually weight less than 85% of their body’s normal weight. Goal should be a weight that is above the weight where normal menstruation occurs. Rather than establishing an exact and appropriate weight expectation it is preferable to try to normalize eating and let weight settle at its natural level. If your friends seems to be thinner then you are, it doesn’t necessarily means you are over weight.
