I thought I was severely allergic to alcohol until I read everyone else's comments. I'm Japanese, Polish and German. One sip of anything alcoholic (including beer) and my face flushes, bloodshot eyes and worst of all, my airways constrict terribly as though I'm having an asthma attack. I have just accepted the fact that I cannot consume alcohol and have become the designated driver. It's a good thing I don't frequent bars. I've become less tolerant of people that can consume alcohol. Mostly because I can't understand a drunk person and they repeat themselves constantly. Pepsi on the rocks will do just fine for me!

a lot of asain americans suffer from alcohol allergies. I have two half vietnamese cousins and they could never get away with going out drinking when they were younger because it was always written across their faces. They would turn bright red in the face but it doesn't cause any harm.

I recommend anyone here who is worried about the dreaded asian flush thing check out the web site below, you''l find all the info you need. I can say that I suffer badly from the asian flush and I'm a white boy from australia. I have one drink and quickly feel my heartpounding my face/neck/back go red and I get dizzy (on any alcohol) To remedy this I simply take a zantac pill and I don't eat during my drinking session, i still feel dizzy but I'm not red, it lasts for maybe 3 hours. I asked my doctor about how safe the drug is and apparently it is quite safe to use long term. Happy Drinking

I am able to tolerate moderate alcohol since I began taking Claritin or Zyrtec. Also advice drinking a glass of water before and after each drink. It used to be very embarassing to break out in blotchy bright red spots. No more problem. I limit to 1 drink an hour and 3 max. Enjoy.

i am not asian but still have very similar symptoms to everyone else. i have been allergic to alcoholic beverages since the first time i ever got drunk when i was 14. at first i did not feel anything but the next morning i woke up with my skin turned bright red with blotches of white spots everywhere. my family looked at them and said they looked like hives. i tried drinking other types of alcohol beverages such as wine rum and tequila but the same reaction occurred. i talked to my doctor and let him know that i believed that i was allergic to alcohol but he said that it had to be something in the alcohol but i mentioned that fruits and wheat don't make me react just beer and other alcohol. when i drink just a little bit i just get a few stains. when i drink excessively its when i turn bright red and my skin starts to burn. the weird part of all is that i only get the red stains where my shirt covers. places like my face, neck, hands, and feet seem to stay the same. what i figured was that it is only where my body is the hottest so what i do is wear the least amount of clothes and blankets to sleep at night to keep my body from over heating. the only thing i don't like about doing this is that the stains/hives don't go away for about two weeks..
if you know of another thing to do to prevent from this happening or if there is a way to make the stains go away faster please reply to this asap. thank you..

Flushing (Asian Flush) is not an allergy.
I have an allergy to something in alcohol, last week I had a sip of alcohol (rev) and not even 10 minutes later, my mouth (lips/tongue) were swollen almost twice the normal size, I had a rash/hives all over my body, I had very bad nausea, I was very dizzy, ...
I'm not sure what I could be reacting to?
Since I react to several foods and almost every kind of shampoos/soaps/laundry detergent/... , I was thinking maybe sulphites?

Hi guys,
I think it is great that there is a forum to discuss this sort of topic.
I dont have the true alcohol allergy, rather i am certain that i have Asian Flush.
When i drink alcohol my face turns bright red and i get a headache and very wheezy breathing. I dont think scientist have found a permanent cure for this condition as its root cause is a genetic enzyme deficiency, but i have discovered a few things that can eliminate the occurrence of the facial flushing which is the my main concern.
The idea of reducing yeast from your diet is a great one, and is something that i too have incorporated in my daily routine.
keep the posts coming,

Hey all,
It is great that there is a forum discussing a topic like this.
I don't have the true alcohol allergy but i definitely do have asian flush. When i drink alcohol my face turns red and i get a headache and very wheezy breathing.
The condition is caused by a genetic enzyme deficiency so to date there is no permanent cure. That said, i have discovered a few ways to eliminate the red face caused by asian flush which was the main thing that concerned me!
The idea about reducing yeast in your diet is a great one, and i have also incorporated this into my regime. Also try incorporating Niacin into your daily diet, this has also helped me dramatically.
hope this helps.

Hi i'm korean and i used to get THE WORST "asian glow" everytime I drank. Which was just about every night because I bottle waitress and bartend. Even just one shot. Take pepcid AC 15 min before drinking it coats your stomach lining so that the alcohol doesn't go into your blood stream as fast and makes your skin flushed and red or break out in hives. You get a mild flush but that's it. happi drinking. :-)

IT DOESN'T SOUND IMPOSSIBLE TO ME. I CANNOT EVEN INGEST A THIMBLE FULL OF ANY TYPE OF ALCOHOL WITHOUT FEELING LIKE MY FACE IS GOING TO BURST INTO FLAMES. (I'M 45 & CAUCASION)

Hi - I had the embarrassing "asian flush for ages until I found a product which works. Pepcid definately does the trick. I normally have 10mg of the chewable form about 1 hour before I start drinking. Found this interesting site which recommends 20mg. You can buy it bulk from that website as well.

There is only one cure for the hives you get from drinking. It is to get immune to the alcohol. You have to drink 2-3 beers per night for 10 days straight and your body will get used to the alcohol. However, you will go through a devastating itch for up to 4 days and it'll feel like hell. But it's worth it because now I never have to worry about the hives and itch ever again. Be strong its only 10 days and it'll be gone for a lifetime.

I have been experiencing this myself. I use to drink alcohol going out with friends and had no problems with it at all. I got really sick with upper respitory about 3 years ago and took a dose of nyquil and my face started itching and red and body was so hot. I thought it was something to do with med so did not take any more. A month or so later my sister had a bad day and wanted a beer so I had one in that had been there forever and told her to drink it. I took a small drink of it and it started happening again. Now it only take a small sip and this happens. It last for about 20 minutes after the small drink and it is gone. I check from time to time to see if I will get the reaction and the last time my husband was having a margarita and I took a small sip and it was horribly worse. Right after this started happening I started getting extreme right side pain and still have it now. The Dr said I have Krohns but not sure what that has to do with alcohol. Any answers would be great
