Reply to auto: Good and Bad news.
I was there [Mayo, Dr. Krambeck] in September for the two days of tests, including the cystoscopy.
The Bad: I had 2 or 3 cystos in the late 1990s, and a couple more over the last two years, all of which were painful and most uncomfortable. The tubing looked like a piece of corrugated steel culvert, and felt worse. I was dreading the procedure at Mayo.
The Good: Whether it was the technique of Dr. K or something else, this cysto was comfortable [or perhaps, the least uncomfortable, I have experienced]. The tech guy was good, very caring, and reassuring. He said Dr. K has excellent technique and that the procedure would not be too bad. I was confident that he was a liar; however, the procedure went amazingly well. The first part was a little uncomfortable, but from that point forward no pain at all. I did not even feel the retraction of the instrument. Perhaps because of the high level of fear I had coming in, I was almost high afterward.
Although I was at Mayo for another day, for an ultra sound, I have no doubt that I could have traveled home immediately after the cysto. I drove home [6 hours] the following day-no problems.
I am scheduled for HoLEP January 8/9, with Dr. Krambeck.
Good luck with your tests.

In reply to this inquiry: first, I have tried to register on this forum, but it will not accept my e-mail address. Thus, I am replying as "guest" but to avoid confusion am signing by my initials, SGE. My scheduled HoLEP was for January 9, at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, but due to an emergency was rescheduled for Friday, Jan 17. Surgery was early afternoon last Friday by Dr. Krambeck. I believe that the procedure went well. I was discharged from the hospital Saturday around 1pm. I drove home yesterday, Sunday, and am getting along reasonably well. I do have blood in my urine, but much less color than before. Stream is good. Some urgency, but not too bad. Really too soon to make many assessments, but will follow up in a week or two. Indicate if you want more detail and we can consider an e-mail exchange-don't want to bore everyone on here with the same things they all have experienced. Good luck. SGE

Has anyone heard of Dr Claus Roerborn (Dallas,Tx.) and his performance of the HoLEP procedure. I am needing BPH surgery and heard he does this.

I would go to the best: Mayo Clinics or Dr. Lingeman. Simple--they have a proven track records and really specialize in the HoLep, for example, the nurses at Indiana University knew exactly what to expect during the 23 hour observation period--they are excellent.

I live in KY and I am considering a call to Dr. L. How is your overall prostate health now?

Overall, my prostate health is excellent-no issues-never used a pad; had bleeding of course (initially) and scabbing as the capsule healed-but am quite pleased-Dr. L. is excellent-quite skilled at the procedure-he told me he had performed over 2000 and could do it in his sleep. I asked that he perform the procedure himself and not an intern--he agreed.

If Tylenol is giving you effective relief, you should investigate further the report that it causes liver damage because my research indicates that report is exagerated.

Hello Barry,
I have followed your very helpful account of your Holep surgery and your recovery through the period 10/28/12.
I am contemplating this surgery and would greatly appreciate hearing a bit about the subsequent healing process--whether there are residual problem in terms of peeing frequency, pain, or other matters.
I know that this is a bother, but I do hope you will take a few minutes to reply.

Hello S"
The columbia University caught my attention--I have an Ll.M. in law from Columbia. I am now over 1.5 years post HoLep with Dr. Lingeman and all is well. I wake up one per night and pee. The healing process takes a while--bleeding while peeing; scabs form and break up and I peed them out--the capsule heals and scabs form. It was really about 1 year before everything settled down and are really good. I never used a pad -ever-- and have has no leakage. For me, it was the right procedure and I am glad I flew to Indiana, took off a week of work, and was fortunate enough to have a very skilled surgeon perform the procedure. best of luck. Bill in CA
