If I wanted to get a commercial driver's license, would there be any restrictions because I have diabetes? It's pretty well-controlled. I just want to know before I go to the trouble of learning how to drive an 18-wheeler if my diabetes will stand in the way.

You need to fill out a diabetes exemption form if you inject insulin and you'll need an exam by an endocrinologist and perdiocally you'll need a vision exam. In the U.S., the Department of Transportation sets down the rules you'll need to follow in order to obtain and keep a commerical driver's license. Once your license is issued, you'll just need to comply with the medical exams required and you'll be able to keep your license. You'll want to start the process at least 180 days before you hope to receive your license.

I have my CDL and I don't have any restrictions on my license with my diabetes. Of course I didn't tell the license bureau that I even had diabetes. Why would they ask that anyway. I'm not an epileptic. I don't have seizures, so why does the state government have to know about my diabetes? I've been driving for 15 years, and I know when I need to have a snack to keep my sugar level up. I sit all day and don't get a chance to test as often as I should.
