In some conservative cultures, breaking of the hymen (irrespective of how it is broken--whether doing physical activity or having sex) WAS/IS considered loss of virginity (I am not sure if this stereotype still exists, it probably does). This may look illogical to some of you, but this was/is considered the only way to determine whether the girl is sexually pure or not. So, after marriage, usually after the first night, the husband himself would expect to see blood on the bedsheet (which would be the result of the hymen breaking during penetration). If he doesn't, he might get suspicious and the girl would be subject to all sorts of humiliation and embarrassment, either from the family, the husband, or both! This probably sounds ridiculous, but believe it or not, it is true and has happened before!!

Any woman/girl who honestly remains a virgin till marriage, or does not believe in pre-marital sex, would not like to lose such an important level of trust from her in-laws and especially her husband! Thus, it is only natural for girls from such cultural backgrounds (or those exposed to such beliefs)to ask a question like 'whether inserting a tampon/ breaking the hymen' will make you lose your virginity. So, all those answering this question (westerners, I presume), please get this straight first! The question probably sounds illogical, but it is a genuine issue and stems from specific cultural beliefs: In other words,
presence of blood (breaking of the hymen) after the first intercourse = the girl is virgin, and virtuous!

Now, of course there are several other factors at play here that may cause the hymen to break, such as doing different kinds of physical activity (like horseback riding). Some may not even bleed during their first intercourse (this probably is because the hymen is broken already, or in other cases, it does not tear at all) Hence, there is all the more stronger concern of keeping one's hymen intact prior to marriage, or first intercourse.

Now getting to the issue of tampon usage and breaking of the hymen: yes, it is possible that you might break/tear your hymen during tampon use. However, the hymen is a stretchable piece of skin with a hole (vagina) in it. The hymen, in other words, borders the vagina. You can actually see it, if you use a mirror. Its the tender pink skin that surrounds/borders the entrance of the vagina. ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***
Now during penetration, especially for women who have a smaller vagina entrance, their hymen, or the pink skin surrounding the entrance will tear, and consequently bleed. Yet for others, this may not be the case, especially if they have toyed (penetrated themselves with foreign objects, or engaged in constant fingering) with themselves before, and have managed to actually stretch the hymen-hole without actually tearing it. So, in other words, the hymen that surrounds the vagina is stretchable. But if you are brash with yourself, you can tear it. If you want to be extremely careful and not break your hymen,
1. Use a plastic tampon that has the lowest/minimum absorbency. This is important because you don't want to suffer from TSS or Toxic Shock Syndrome which can be caused when you use a higher absorbency tampon. The first time I used one was the Tampax Pearl 'lites'. It has the color code, lavender. The other color codes for tampons are: yellow for regular, Green for super, Orange is for super plus. Please stay away from the greens and orange coded tampons because all tampons expand when it starts to absorb (test one by pouring some water on an exposed tampon). So the greens and oranges become ginormous (according to my standards) and will be harder to remove once it goes in.
2. When removing the tampon, remember to pull at it from the diagonal position (just as you should insert from a diagonal position, squat a little if you have to). Pull gently, take a deep breath, relax and just pull the string gently.. it should come out just fine without tearing, or affecting your hymen cuz the tampon is just cotton after all. If you remember, your hymen IS stretchable. So, if you are gentle, when inserting and removing the tampon, there is no way you can tear it. Only if you yank it out of you, the chances of you breaking your hymen are bigger. Yes it is effective, but there is the possibility of TSS which can be fatal in severe/extreme cases. You would have to be highly absent-minded (leaving the tampon in you for hours) for that to happen! I personally use tampons only if I have to go swimming or to the pool. For other regular period days, I use pads, just because they are so much more safer and I don't have to worry about the hymen and all that jazz in the first place! :P

My experience was that using my first tampon did in fact tear my hymen. My first sexual experience there was no difficulty or pain but putting that first tampon in was very difficult. Everyone's physiology is different.

I'm 17 a virgin and last night I broke my hymen. With a tampon. Not meaning to. I had just put a tampon in and felt like it was already full so when I went to take it out I had horrible pain. As soon as I got it out a rush of blood like a bloody nose came out and it didn't stop for a few seconds. So you can tell the difference from breaking the hymen with a tampon and your period. Yes this isn't a usual occurrence but it is possible. It hurt like hell for a while but after a little while it stopped bleeding. Mind you it was the second to last day of my menstrual cycle also. So I wasn't bleeding very much at all. It was quiet obvious to me and my mother who works at a gyno clinic that I did break my hymen. Cramps are completely normal. Painful and normal. Best way to deal with them is acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Midol and Pamprin work for most people. I have terrible cramps so I have to take a different medication.  Heat pads are also very nice. Hot bath works as well. anything hot really helps with loosening the muscles around your pelvis.

a tampon can cause pain if you are using the wrong "size" fyi the size is only in reference to how much it absorbs not the size of anything else. read the facts sheets in the box and a lot of brands have websites with more facts and useful information

It is very rare that you will ever break your hymen by inserting tampons! Some people are too tense or are aiming wrong or are in the 2% of teens with an abnormally small vaginal opening and they are the ones who might

Also if the tampon makes you feel physically uncomfortable, it's not in far enough or might be too large.

Well if you insert two fingers it my break, by the way the hymen covers 1 part of the vagina and it's around the edge of the hole and if you push that out and it will make a bigger hole and if you don't do it often or it will close in more but not all the way. :)

It is disappointing to to see people spouting the same marketing garbage we get from the tampon manufacturers about, tampons can't damage your hymen, and a hymen doesn't equate to virginity anyway.

The reality is eveyone's body is slightly different (and maybe their view of virginity is too).  Beyond urban legend, there have actually been scientific studies on this.  (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14993089).

Interestingly, the facts show that 97% of girls in the study that had never had sexual intercourse also had intact hymens, suggesting that there is some credance to the traditional association between hymens and virginity.  Also, 100% of those virgins that did not have intact hymens tore theirs due to tampon use (not bike/horse riding or gymnastics, etc.)

Another study showed a 14% chance of tearing your hymen with tampon use.  Which sounds like good odds, but think about it:  If some one said you had a 14% chance of losing your right arm by crossing a road, as opposed to a zero percent chance by taking a less-convenient foot bridge.  Would you still take the risk?  How much do you value your hymen?  Is it worth eliminating all risk to damaging it?

I never used a tampon before I had sex and never bled. Some people don't bleed. It is normal either way. Who wants the embarrassment of bleeding on somebody anyways? Yuck. The first time is awkward enough without that mess.

So from reading the previous responses...there seems to be VERY MIXED messages. About half of the people who responded said a tampon cannot rip your hymen...and many emphasized this by saying something like...there's no way a tampon can rip your hymen...it's stretchable/elastic, there's enough of an opening, etc.

Then, about the other half of the people who responded said, yes I ripped or tore my hymen from using tampons...this ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO ME.

Well, obviously we know which answer trumps which answer...the girls who all said they ripped their hymen from using tampons aren't all just conspiring and making this up...it obviously has to happen with some and from reading the responses seems often enough to be of significance. Also, women are born with many different kinds of hymens, among them are annular, cribiform, septate, microperforate…all of which can cause tampons to be uncomfortable or break the hymen.
I am a guy and to me this would be a very important issue...not only with my daughter, but also with my wife...that we see eye to eye on this issue and the fact that because of what could possibly happen with tampons, that it is best to use pads until sexual activity....or at the very least have an informed, heart to heart discussion with your daughter so she fully understands the possible implications of using tampons.

I am a single father of 2 daughters and as much as this sucks to read , I appreciate the forum becuz my mother is giving me all kinds of c**p becuz i have had my oldest use tampons 1st and now my youngest is about to start using them (w/applicator) an my old school mom us very vocal about this "ruining her virginity). It did NOT affect my oldest daughters but I wanna make sure that I am still doing the right thing for my kids and be as informed as possible when discussing this even though I'm a father , I need help in some of these type of situations, so I'm goin with "its possible , but extremely rare, and since she's very athletic it can break anyway thru that, it's not necessarily a risky oprion i just believe pads are more difficult for little girls to manage and can lead to more mishaps than tampons "
