This surgery has been recommended to me but I am concerned about post operative complications such as infection. Has anyone had any experience that might speak to that issue?

Hi, Jillie.

I managed to speak with a relative of mine who underwent this surgery.

He had piriformis release surgery about five years ago, and had a relatively smooth experience. He felt some numbness in the area for about a week afterwards, but it eventually went away. He had no other complications and no need for additional surgeries.

Piriformis release surgery complications can include temporary numbness in the area of the buttock, bleeding or infection at the surgical site, and nerve damage. In some cases, the piriformis muscle can become inflamed again after the surgery, leading to a need for more surgery or rehabilitation.

As for complications and ways to treat them:

1. Infection: Proper wound care and antibiotic treatment should be administered to reduce the risk of infection.

2. Nerve damage: Physical therapy and targeted exercises can help protect and strengthen the surrounding nerves, reducing the risk of nerve damage.

3. Tendon adhesions: Gentle stretching and massage can help reduce adhesions and improve range of motion.

4. Sciatic nerve injury: Physical therapy and targeted exercises can help protect and strengthen the surrounding nerves, reducing the risk of nerve damage.

5. Implant failure: Follow up visits with the doctor and regular imaging tests may be necessary to monitor the implant to ensure it is successfully integrated into the body.

6. Persistent pain: Anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and targeted exercises may help reduce pain and improve function.

7. Arthritis: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy can help reduce the symptoms of arthritis.

8. Scar tissue formation: Gentle stretching and massage can help reduce adhesions and improve range of motion.

9. Decreased range of motion: Physical therapy and targeted exercises can help improve range of motion.
