My husband is supposed to start either Carac or Efudex for his skin cancer, and so far all the stories I’ve read point to a very grueling month of this treatment, with pain, itching and burning of the skin on his face. That’s not a surprise since those both are chemotherapy drugs, and they always come with side effects.
What I’m wondering, though, is is there a study that compares which one of these medications has less side effects and which one is more effective?

I was looking into same issue when I had to go through Efudex treatment and from what I've read from people's experiences with both Carac and Efudex, it seems they are equally effective and they both cause very unpleasant side effects simply due to the fact that they both are, like you said, chemotherapy medications.
Anyhow, there is no reason for there to be difference in effectiveness between the two simply because they both contain the same active substance - fluorouracil.
