I have been suffering from this debilitating problem for around 4 years now. Here is how it all started:
I had done something foolish that I regret to this day, I had just taken a shower and afterwards I had a sensation that my left ear was blocked, so I decided to do the valsalva maneuver, the bad thing is, that I did it very very strong and for a long time and then, boom I feel something pop in the right side of my throat and neck and then a pain (numbness) over my right eye and along the right side of my face.
Now everyday is a struggle for me and this is what I go through and my symptoms:
Everything starts in the back right side of my tongue, when I flex and move that part, there is clicking and grinding in the right side of my neck and throat, every time I swallow, there is a clicking.
Now the problem is when I swallow food, as I am swallowing, in that area (in the back right side of my tongue) some mechanism in that part of my throat seems to be displaced and gets caught and the clicking and grinding is worsened, and then these symptoms occur:
My throat gets very dry, feels like something is caught in my throat, I get horrible breath, the hole right side of my neck and throat feels abnormal, like something is interfering with everything, I get numbness on the right side of my face over my right eye and my right cheek bone, back of my neck gets sore, but that’s not the worst of it. Here are my neurological symptoms this is what is bothering me the most:
Dizziness, nausea, headache, I cannot concentrate, I feel although my brain is being tampered with or something is squeezing on my carotid artery. I feel so extreme tension in the right side of my neck and my head.
Now all of this is intermittent, I feel these symptoms mostly after eating, after moving around a lot, like when I play sports, if I turn my neck, I hardly ever turn my neck, The symptoms last several hours to several days, now over the years I have discovered ways to alleviate the symptoms, here is the way that works a lot of the time: I drink a lot of water, then I make myself through it up, this seems to release whatever is caught and then the symptoms are temporarely alleviated but this doesn’t always work. or I cough really hard, make myself sneeze, flex my neck a lot, I know right away when the symptoms are alleviated. It is such a comfortable feeling.
These are the test that I have done:
-CT of the neck
-MRI Brain
-X-Ray of sinuses
-Barium swallow
-mri of the neck
everything is negative

Hi!
So sorry to hear about your difficulties :-( Well, all I can say is to think about seeing a speech-language pahtologist. Yes, I know what people think about them, they only help kids say they're /r/'s, but that is only a small portion of their practice. They are also the people you go to for a swallowing disorder/problem. They are allot more friendly than any doctor you will go to, and they will try their best to figure out what is going on.
If you don't have insurance, you can get services for free to very little from a local university that has a speech-language pathology/communicative disorders/ speech and hearing science (major has many names) clinic. If you go to ASHA.org, they can give you a list of graduate programs in the area, call the program to see if they have a clinic.
I'm not a doctor, just a SLP student, but it sounds to me like you could have pinched a nerve, one that controls all swallowing reflexes, which is something that can be easily overlooked. I really hope this helps...let me know if you have any quesitons!!

Hey, thank you for your replie, I am going to give it a try , to see a speech-language pathotogist, i mean i am desperate i will try anything to get relief, its crazy I cannot go more than a day without throughing up, of course i drink water than through it up. once i stayed two days without throughing up and my face was soo pale and was feeling soo dizzy and nausious i was feeling like i could pass out, i swear something is pressing on my artery. my confidence is so low i am 29 years old havent had a girlfriend in 4 years dont have the confidence, i cant enjoy eating and not woring about my throat screwing up and feeling all these symptoms. at least i get temperory relief when i do thgrough up, thank god.
a regular headache would be soo much better than having these symptoms, when i feel these symptoms i am completly not my self i have no spontenaty i feel out to lunch like a zomby, one doctor told me that i had an elongated styloid process, i got my hopes up thinking it was that, and the ct scan showed nothing of that. there is no way i could write this paragraph when i am feeling the symptoms. I know for sure that my problem is physical because when i fix my throat by throuhing up after this when i swallow there is no clicking. when i eat a meal after i eat i feel the symptoms and there is a clicking an grindiing after i swallow and when I move the right side of my toungue around. i guess the doctors cant figure it out because its a mechanical problem, they know how to cure sicness and not these types of rare disorders. i live in canada and i noticed in the states they have swallow disorder centers, i wonder how much that will cost. i feel like my life is passing me by its like i dont see kids and a wife in the futur with this stupid problem that i have. when i am feeling the symptoms i hate being in the public, some people ask me what I am thinking about, i am not thinking anything just feeling like sh*t, i am not that up beat guy that i used to be, when i am feeling these symptoms i dont want to go out anywhere just want to stay home. i saw so many doctors my dad thinks it psychological problem, it obviesly appears that way. anyway, thanks again for your replie and your advice, i am glad your caring and helping i am that way with others i am glad your like that with me.

i feel ur pain & understand how uncomfortable it is and also the severity..i just wanted to come by and leave my story with you, i have no medical so cannot afford to see a doctor & i am relying on the internet for help..

Hi, I also have the same problem as danny29. Since it has been over a year since any posts, I am hoping that you have received medical help and possibly found out what is causing this swallowing problem. If anyone has any information about this, can you please share it so that the rest of us with this terrible problem have some insight into what is causing it and can get the proper medical attention. Thank you danny29 for posting this and to all others who reply.

I have this same thing. I get this grinding/clicking sound whenever I swallow. It is on the left side of my throat. It's somewhat painful and very worrisome. I have had GERD for many years now, quit smoking about 6 years ago, and have frequent bouts of strep throat and sinusitis. For me, the clicking/grinding during swallowing feels like two bones rubbing against each other, though I have no idea if that is what is going on or is even possible. What I do know is that this is a real problem, not something I am imagining. It is nice to know that I am not alone and that others have also experienced this, though it is discouraging that no one seems to have received an accurate diagnosis, or more importantly effective treatment. I have not gone to a doctor about it yet, but I know I should. I just worry that they will do tons of test and end up thinking I am just crazy. If I go I think I will insist that the doctor puts his stethoscope on my throat so that he can hear the grinding/clicking sound when I swallow. I feel certain that he will be able to hear it. Please keep this thread alive if anyone gets any clear medical answers, or from others with similar symptoms and experiences.

Hi
I also have suffered with this "clicking throat" problem. Although my doctor doesn't have a clue...I'm seeing an ENT on the 10th of June, so maybe I'll get some answers...not hopefull though. In the meantime I did find the following information at the following link:
It happens to me when I'm laying on my LEFT side only or a few times while sitting or standing, but not many. i've noticed it for about six years now and although it hasn't gotten any worse...it has been getting more frequent. It's more annoying than painful, especially at bed time. I don't experience very my pain at all when this happens.

There has got to be a name for this thing if we are all having the same problems. Sometimes when I turn my head I feel a "POP" in my throat, then I get dizzy, I want to puke, I start sweating, I get a raging head ach, my tongue goes numb. And sometimes my vision starts to "dim" like I'm going to pass out. It only lasts 1-2 minutes, but those minutes are complete HELL. Has ANYONE heard what the hell this may be? I hate trying to tell people about it. All the doctors I have talked to this about are clueless. I also have P.E.T. I'm wondering if they are related. Anyway. I cant seem to find any other sources for this "condition." Hope you are all well.

Can someone tell me what is causing me to have a clicking noise in my throat? I also have a Hashimoto thyroiditis problem. Could it be stress?
