My latest question is this:

When I first began my running, I would walk a while, then run a while, then slow to a walk, then run. Kinda like running w/ a nice recovery time... and the whole time out would be maybe an hour???

Ok, at this point, I have bridged the gap of my walkings- now I can run about 1.5-1.7 miles w/o tiring. At that point, my steps get clumsy and my breathing is deeeeeep. I am at a good slow pace, so I usually tell myself to have a recovery walk and then do my stretches and head home. But here's what I wonder-

Can I walk as recovery and speed back into my slow running pace for another mile or two, then slow to a recovery walk, then run again...? Am I just stretching out my runs longer, but still need to continue on like I did when I first started- when my runs would last 2 minutes... and walking would last hours if I let it...:)

I hope this hasn't sounded too confusing.

So you have been running for at least 4 months now (by your log). it seems your long runs are way out of porportion to your weekly milage. Two guidelines for long runs:

1. Long runs should not be more then twice your second longest run.
2. Long runs should not be more then a third of your weekly milage.

As you get more miles in your legs, you can bend the rules a little.


Also, it sounds like your are starting out to fast. We all do even after years of running. A heart rate monitor (HRM) is a huge help. It forces you to run in your aerobic zone.
