Had surgery a month ago and got oxycodone for pain, 10 mg every 3 hrs. Within a couple weeks I needed less, went to 10 mg every 6 hrs. Then the nausea started to get to me and I quit. (the doc didn't warn me about not going cold turkey). 24 hrs later I suddenly started to have withdrawl symptoms, the worst of which was a very very deep my-world-has-ended depression/anxiety--came on very suddenly, so I know it's the meds. I made it 48 hours, then decided to taper off the meds. Last night I started taking 5 mg every 6 hrs. It helped a little, but I still feel pretty bad--some chills and some depression, just not as bad as yesterday.
I'm wondering 1) how quickly should I taper off 2) how long should I expect to feel bad since I was only on the meds for a month. I know my body has to start to make its own serotonin again, not sure how long that takes.

Hi hon! You are talking to an Oxycodone and Oxycocet addict, so I understand about this! HOWEVER, I have a question, when you have been in pain in the past, do you ever find that pain medication affects you quickly?

Usually short term Oxy use, doesn't have such MAJOR withdrawls and symptoms as you are experiencing! Can I ask what the surgery was for? I have another thought about what you are experiencing!

thanks for your response.the surgery was for a VERY badly broken leg--they put a rod in the tibia. The only other time I've been on pain meds was 10 years ago for a slipped disk. I was on vicodin then darvocet for 2+ months. I had no problem quitting then.
This is probably compounded by rhe fact that the drug turned off my appetite and made me nauseous, so I lost 15 lbs in 3 weeks--my blood sugar is probably going bonkers!

It sounds more to me like you mimght be allergic to the medication itself! I dunno if you have been tested for that but I think you're allergic to an opiate. What do you think?

Even though HFG is partly right, Oxy allergies are itching, skin erruptions, burning skin, shakes, nausea, etc. Depression isn't one of them!

Like I stated originally, I think this isn't so much about Opiates as what you think it is! There is a LOT of research into people having severe depression afte surgeries! Some studies show that people who go through MAJOR surgery can have depression or mood changes for up to a year!!! Also due to your weight loss becauswe Opiates can be VERY stomach upsetting! You are right to think that your blood sugars are going bonkars! WHICH also cause depression and mood swings! So wean yourself off the Oxy - as an addict you are on such a little amount, this wouldn't be affecting you so badly right now! And when you are off them and while you are weaning, start eating better, get a hold of a diabetes diet chart, and start listening to your body regarding you blood sugars! Now I want you to give yourself 2 weeks, and IF you still notice that you are depressed, then I want you to talk to your doctor about it! You might just need a short term anti depressent just to get your seratonin levels back to normal - this is done just for a couple of months!

Also start writing down what you are eating etc, and how you feel, and see if you can "connect the dots" so to speak! It is amazing just how much we need regulated blood sugars for optimal health - both mental and physical! Please keep me updated and good luck and health hon!
