!!!PLEASE READ ALL, VERY DETAILED STORY, MAY BE IMPORTANT!!!
Hi Ladies,
I realize this is an old thread, and I have little light to shed on the situation, but I wanted to share my story as I'm concerned some of the advise on here SHOULD NOT be applied to everyone, in fact to some it could be harmful.
I was 14 when I started taking the pill (Microgynon 30, a combination of progesterone and oestrogen). For a while, it was fine, it didn't really change my bleeding (I was quite regular and would bleed when I stopped taking the pill each month and stop just before I started again). I took this pill for a few months. Though the details are hazy (as this is 3 years ago now) I believe this is when irregular, heavy patterns started up. My doctor prescribed me a stronger pill (Cilest) but I had the same issues. As I entered a new relationship and assumed it could become sexual, I decided to get the Nexplanon (implant) as I was told this should correct my bleeding. Boy, what a mistake!
The implant is entirely progesterone and a slow release at that. Some women on this forum are recommending it for stopping heavy bleeding. Please, do not take this advise unless you have experience using a progesterone based pill and know it doesn't cause heavy bleeding. I wish I had.
I kept the implant for 8 months and bled the entire time. I tried the combined bill (Microgynon again) but could only keep that up for a week as my mood swings became unbearable, I spent every night crying myself to sleep. During this time I had no severe clotting, just red blood for maybe a week each month and the rest would be the thick, brown discharge. I would stop bleeding for 2 days a month- if I was lucky! After 8 months I was sick of it and had it removed. I think I bled for another 2-4months after it's removal, but remember my periods did slow (though perhaps not regulated) for a few months after that, and I went around 8 months clean of contraception during this time.
However, 8 months down the line and wanting to be in a safe sexual relationship, I started taking the pill again. Once more, my bleeding started up quite soon after and for around 6 months I kept up this birth control. I saw my doctor again, had a smear done (everything was normal, as I expected them to say), and predictably they recommended ANOTHER birth control. How I wish I had not accepted.
This time I was given the Depo injection. This, once again, is entirely progesterone based, except it has a higher dose than the implant and is not as slow in it's release. I had the injection ONCE, bled for the whole 3 months (baring in mind I had been bleeding for 6 months in the lead up to having this done) and so I never went back.
That injection was given in early June 2015. I have not used any contraception in this time AT ALL, though I have maintained what I can of a regular sex life (me and my partner will on much lighter days... I'm sure many of you understand there aren't really 'free' days in which we can do it).
It is now a year later, about to be early June 2016, and I only stopped bleeding 8 weeks ago due to very unexpectedly falling pregnant. I find myself now in a difficult predicament. I am 17, wanting to finish school and go onto University. From other stories like mine that I have read, however, it seems many women who experience my problems (and some I know personally) have had to go through a hysterectomy (removal of the entire uterus, for those of who don't know). I am highly concerned this pregnancy could be my only opportunity to have a child in my life. A few years from now and my fertility (what I have of it) will begin to decrease further, reducing my chances even more. I'm also not sure I'm willing to ever try contraception again, and the partner to which I have fallen pregnant is long term and understanding. There's no guarantee a future partner would be, nor that anyone would date somebody who refuses to use hormonal contraceptives.
If I can give one solid piece of advice to anyone having problems even just for a few months (and especially if you're younger): DO NOT LET A DOCTOR TELL YOU IT IS NORMAL. I understand younger girls periods are irregular, but any time you bleed for more than 10 days or experience heavy clotting or periods that soak through pads, IT IS NOT NORMAL. I put it down to my age, and look where it's got me.
