I had a septoplasty plus a little bit of endoscopic sinus work done two days ago.
The put me out and the procedure took about 45 minutes. I had packing in my nose/sinus for 24 hours (taken out yesterday and yes, it sucked), and I have a splint in my nose still to be taken out later this coming week. Pain wasn't a huge factor for me, what really, really sucked was the drainage.
Having your nose packed, all the bleeding is forced down your throat. The day of the surgery, at home, I laid around and blood constantly was going into my throat and I was swallowing it. I tried to spit some out but it's hard when you need to lay back with your head tilted all the time.
So come night time, my stomach was full of my own blood, and apparently my stomach didn't like this. I threw up huge pools of blood repeatedly and my mom almost took me to the ER. It may have been one of the most miserable nights of my life, and I only hope it was worth it. We'll have to see after I'm all healed up.

people should actually know what they are talking about before they wrote. the person who said they had their nose broke is RIGHT! Some deviated septums are so bad they do recuire your nose to be broken. MOST dont but SOME do! I know because m doctor made me watch a video on like the 4 different types of surgeries
Sometimes you need packing, sometimes not. If they break your nose its like 4 times as painful and takes a lot longer to heal
I didnt need mine broken but i did need the packing. And it did hurt like hell the first two days until the packing was taken out
if you have your nose broken, you MUST have packing, and it stays in longer and it really does feel like they are ripping your brains out when they take it out
you people should learn to read or just learn period

I'd just had this surgery Wednesday.. it is now Sunday.
When I woke in recovery, I had no pain, nor did I remember anything after getting drugged.
I was given T3's which I took for two days just in case.
Upon waking after the first night, the pain I experienced was minimal.. maybe a 1 or 2 out of 10.
T3s took this away.
The worst part was the packing.. it was a pain in the butt. It was removed two days after sugery and it wasn't painful.. though shortly afterward minor bleeding started, which hasn't yet stopped yet (approx 40 hours after packs removed).
This minor bleeding is a huge pain, as it's clogged up my nose and is such a mess.
The experience has been okay so far.. the biggest pain was not understanding why my surgeon wanted me to take a week off work, since I have a desk job sitting on my butt.
Now it's evident.. I'd scare people away with my giant red and bloody nose.
I hope when all is healed I will once again be able to breathe!

I just had my deviated septum surgery on Monday, and it is now thursday. Thankfully I did not have any packing, just a few disolvable stitches.
The pain was not as bad as everything that I have read about. Though it does have its moments. The only thing that is still bothering me is the leftover bits of drainage, but I definately want to say that it is not that bad. Been taking the percocet to help me sleep at night, but thats all.
hopefully the end result will be worth it! =)

I just had this surgery 24 hours ago. If you just have a deviated septum, it is likely a 100% guarantee the surgery will be covered. If you have additional work like I did, CALL THE INSURANCE CO PRIOR TO SURGERY! Make sure the doctor and the insurance co are on the same page as to WHAT IS pre approved and WHAT IS NOT pre approved or it will result in costing YOU a lot of money. out of pocket.

I had my surgery done yesterday, and today i go to the doctor to have stuff taken out.
The level of pain the first day: 4-5 on scale of 10, and 10 being the highest. But pain pill helps. Its a throbbing sensation around your nose and a bit towards the back of your head, but not like a shooting pain or anything. First 24 hours are the most uncomfortable because you have to eat, drink and breath from your mouth. I had to change several bandages due to bleeding which seems to have slowed down since only small amount of it is gathering around the nostril. I had to keep my head in elevated position to avoid excessive bleeding in the begining.
I'll find out in next week or so how the breathing goes.

I had surgery on 11-20th. The pain isnt too bad but sleeping through your mouth is tough. My mouth gets very, very dry and I get a sore throat.
I am looking forward to getting this behind me. I see my doctor in the morning to have my stints removed. My septum had my nasal passages about 85% occluded.
I also took this opportunity to have a rhinoplasty performed.

Hi,
I just had my deviated septum repaired and sinuplasty. I've had minimal nasal discomfort, but I've taken my pain meds at least twice a day.
The most irritating thing for me is my throat - due to the tube they inserted to aid in breathing during the surgery. I have to say, my surgeon did a wonderful job - as I can tell thus far. I haven't had much congestion at all. Just follow the directions and take it easy. Make sure to use a humidifier (cool or warm mist - whichever is your preference).
One thing everyone has to remember, each of us is different. Our experience will not be the same as everyone elses. Some may not tolerate anesthia, others have a low tolerance for pain. If you are considering this surgery and your doctor feel it's necessary, discuss your concerns him (her). :-)

i had deviated septum surgery on nov 10th 2008.. it doesnt hurt that much. it just makes you uncomfortable for about 2 weeks.. hard to breath ..but it gets better ..i had dissolvable packing.. which i think didnt dissolve very well... because i was sneezing for 3 days straight and then i would gently blow my nose and the packing would come out... by the way, i was unable to blow my nose before the surgery.. it will soon be 2 months.. it didtn help my allergies.. i was told that from the beginning... so now my nose runs and i sneeze alot... but i can sleep ok. so i think it was worth it... i still use a nasal saline spray.. along with an alergy srpay.. i use the netty pot to gently rinse my nose about every other day..i always had problems with the left nostral on breathing.. and i still think i have some problem there now as it doesnt seem to be the same as the right nostral... i got a2nd opinion on the surgery... just to feel satisified with going on with the surgery...i still seem to have lots of sinus pressure.... i went back to the surgeon for one visit after the surgery.. he said my internal passages were open.. and that i still had an infection which he gave me medicine to treat it... dont be scared..ask in advance for pain medication...i had a 4 week supply of pain medicine...get plenty of rest.. and drink lots of fluids.. this surgery doesnt come cheap .. i thnk mine was 20 grand... but i had good insurance...

What about nasal flushing? Has anyone had to flush post surgery? My doctor is recommending it but I haven't seen too much blog on flushing. I just can't see myself shooting saline up one nostril to have it flow out the other.
