This post chain has been active for some time and I hope many of you will get the chance to read this. It is a bit long but I hope informative and helpful. I am a 32 year old female with an extensive history of ovarian cyst. With certainty, my first rupture was when I was 17. After 8 months of no period, constant vomiting, fatigue and abdominal pain so intense I could not function, I was hospitalized. The resulting diagnosis was multiple cyst on both ovaries, various amounts of scar tissue, and a paralyzed pyloric valve (stomach). My stomach issues were treated by a GI doctor and my cyst by a wonderful Dr. at a women’s health facility. GYN and I were able to determine in addition to a golf ball size cyst on my left ovary I was also causing damage by going to the tanning bed. I was only 93 lbs at 5 feet tall and every time I would get out of the bed I would have an exxxxxtreeemly heavy discharge. His thought was because of how slim I was, the heat of the bed, and the thin cystic walls - they were rupturing as a group. In other words stay out!!! We decided to try and treat the cyst with birth control (hormones). We used one in the family of "low overall" hormones. This seemed to help for short time frames (6-9 months ) but then they would return larger and more painful and we would again change my pill. This was the course of action for about 1.5 years. At 19 (2 yrs later) I had new symptoms; rapid heart rate, syncope, fainting, NO energy, intolerable to outdoors because of heat and activity, etc. I began seeking the treatment of a cardiologist and have been under the care with no significant improvement for 12 years now. At 20 (3 yrs after symptoms presented) I stopped taking birth control with the hopes of getting pregnant. At 22 (5 yrs after symptoms presented) my cyst continued to persist until I had one the size of a golf ball (appr. 4 cm). My doctor opted for laparoscopic surgery. The surgery was 2 weeks later, but the cyst had already ruptured. While she was there she did a thorough evaluation and discovered no abnormalities and even checked the flow of my tubes for pregnancy. About 6 months later I was pregnant - and felt better than ever. About 6 months after my son was born the symptoms began to return. Instead of birth control pills I tried Nuvaring which seemed to do well and my symptoms were not as bad as before. 1.5 years after he was born I had an IUD put in. I wore it for almost three years when I began extremely ill. My symptoms were all the same but much more intense and grew worse over several months. My hair began to fall out, I did nothing but through up and sleep, and could not even stand up for anytime. My breast were tender and over the several month span I had taken 2 pregnancy test thinking I was based on the way my body felt. Finally since my family DR had no idea what was going on I decided it really seemed hormonal and went to my GYN. My IUD had implanted itself into the wall of my uterus and was significantly embedded. My tubes were four times there normal size filled with fluid and extreme swelling throughout my entire uterus. I was scheduled for emergency surgery to have it removed. The surgery went fine and with lots and lots of antibiotics I began improvement just two days later. I did not return to any form of birth control - I wanted my body to have the opportunity to heal and hopefully recover from the damage ( we thought permanent damage to my tubes and fertility was probable) However shortly after similar symptoms returned. We are now up to 2010 and 15 years in to my symptoms. Once again at a more intense level (3 months of not being able to function, think, incredible pain, vomiting after any activity, etc) and yet another sound reveling only a small 1.5 cm cyst on my right ovary my GYN recommended we go in again laparoscopally. My procedure was 3 weeks later. Findings - a 1.5 cm cyst on my right ovary is removed. She then goes to look and check everything else out while there and shockingly discovers a 8.00 cm cyst on the back of my left ovary tucked under my colon! It to is removed. I can not tell you how much better I felt (but of course for only a short time before they start back). So in summary - after much research , testing , and diagnosis here is the short of it. I have reoccurring cyst - some reaching the size of softballs! They cause intense abdominal pain - my belly will swell up to 4 inches with the worst of them - I go through about 2 rounds of them during my normal ovulation and during menstrual cycle blood and fluid sometimes back up in to the tubes causing indescribable pain, discharge when they rupture (thicker and heavier depending on the intensity of the other symptoms), discharge during physical activity (exercise or other type physical activity), breast tenderness and warmness, fatigue, vomiting, loss of appetite, hair loss, irritability, pain in my hip joints from the swelling, inability to concentrate, and overall feeling of YUCK! ( all these intensify as the cycle continues). We have now also linked my "cardiac" symptoms as well. Turns out they are all related because of the chronic pain the cyst cause. I can not take pain meds that actually help because of my work and being a mom so over the years I have learned to tune out a lot of the pain, but my body has not. So in response to the constant pain and hormone level variations shortness of breath, fainting, and palpitations are all common - there are some great articles on chronic pain and the effects on the cardiac symptoms. My recommended course of treatment is to go on hormones without a "off " week to stop my periods. However, we also hope for another child so she has told us I am only going to worsen so we need to do it now - which we are working on. Then we will attempt the hormonal treatment. The only other option is to remove the ovaries - which we do not want unless last resort because of the effect on the bones, menopause and etc with me still being in my early thirties. Also - my condition is not suggestive of any cancer since I have had so many and none of presented with cancer cells. For anyone in this situation - you are not crazy - this can be a life altering condition but you do have some options. Many women are not provided this information and have no idea what is going on with their bodies and health... Please keep this post going. Find a Dr. who understands and is willing to monitor you properly.

I was diagnosed with Polosistic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) about 14 years ago (I was 20). I would have sporatic cycles, and stabbing pain all the time. The pain was from cysts rupturing. I've had strong odors, tons of discharge, I also have cysts in family, most of what has been described. I would have ruptures about 5 times a year, at least! Did you know that eating lots of processed foods can cause PCOS? Good news, after having my first child, the PCOS pretty much disappeared. I've had 2 more children, and the symptoms have almost all vanished completed. With each birth, my body got better, not sure why, but not complaining! I also watch what I eat, and don't really eat that much processed food anymore. It's helped alot. Caffeine also stimulates cysts. So bottom line, eat less processed foods (fast foods, pre-packaged, etc.), limit caffeine to about 6oz a day (that was HARD), also if you are a carb-o-holic like I've been, drop down to 60g a day. Try to find a PCOS specialist or get a good book about PCOS, it will help. PCOS can also have infertility issues, but dropping carbs and eating more balanced meals, helps alot! Good luck.

I have had ovarian cysts for 17 years. It started when I was 7 months pregnant with my last child. I went to the Doctor who told me the baby was pushing against a nerve. This was my third pregnancy and I told him it was not that. It felt like I was having an appendicitis attack. He basically rolled his eyes at me like I was a hypochontriac. Well I have had this pain every month (and sometimes 2 or 3 times a month) ffor 17 years. After about 3 years of this I had ultrasound which showed cysts and was sent to a gynecologist who told me "You are making the earth shake like an earthquake" when I requested that I have ultrasound once every year or so. She also told me that mine were 2 centimeters in diamiter and that they do not become cancerous until they reach 5 centimeters. They were not large but they were extremely painful when they ruptured. I could hardly walk and anything that so much as rubbed against my stomach was excrutiatingly painful. My family doctor told me to take Advil. However, it never helped with the pain so I used a heating pad and tylenol. I never got the care I needed. I changed doctors but had given up on even a regular physical. I think it had been 8 years since my last one. Finally, 3 years ago, my doctor asked me when my last physical was and kind of scolded me for not getting one in years. I told him my issues, (reluctantly as I really didn't think anyone cared) and he asked me what I did for pain. When I told him he was in shock. I had never gone to the emergency room but just "sucked it up" and did what I could for myself at home. As the years have progressed, I am now premenopausal and the pain is substantially reduced. However, the mucousy discharge is seriously increased. Also, I went for a physical a couple of months ago (again to a new doctor) and when she performed the pap smear I was in excrutiating pain and she said my uterous is enlarged. I was tested for STD's which all came back negative. But again, this doctor does not seem to be concerned at all. I feel like I have to be on my death bed before anyone investigates thoroughly into my health issues. I also developed a thyriod condition 3 years ago.

Just had a cyst rupture a couple days ago. first time. im 20, not sexually active. spent 2 days in er because they thought it might be appendicitis. ultrasound ruled it out. doc said it was a ruptured cyst and sent me home with pain meds. since then it hurts to walk. the pain radiates to half way to my knee, and almost to my kidney in my back. im hoping the pain goes away soon. i cant stand or sit up too long with out feeling nauseated. i noticed my urine is darker than usual. just sharing for the heck of it.
