So I had an appointment today to have an abortion at a local clinic. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful and I wasn't feeling nervous at all. That was until the doctor was getting started, and looking for my cervix so she could give me a local anaesthetic. I started panicking, I was so scared, as it seemed something was wrong. The nurse standing next to me reassured me everything would be fine as she held my hand. After several minutes of poking and probing the doctor released a very loud sigh, and said " I can't find your cervix". We took a small break and tried again, nothing. Tried a 3rd time, nothing. 45 minutes went by and she couldn't even get started. She apologizes profusely and said we might have to go for the medical abortion instead.

I will admit, I have read some horror stories about medical abortions and the surgical option seemed like the only way I'd go about it, but there wasn't much I could do about it then. I was actually a bit relieved when I realized she had given up. Laying there completely conscious and exposed made me feel very uncomfortable and nervous. So nervous in fact my legs would not stop shaking and I thought at several moments I was going to throw up. And it was hurting as well. Nothing major, but i could feel everything the doctor was doing, and kept anticipating the pain I would feel when the actual procedure started. I was relieved...

Nonetheless, as painful and uncomfortable as it would have been, it would have been over quickly and by now I would be done with it.

Now i must do it medically, and I am extremely anxious about it as well. The doctor prescribed some vicodin for the pain and I am hoping I'll have it easy and can for the most part sleep through it, we shall see.

But the fact that she could not find my cervix made me very anxious. In case this medical abortion fails (and sometimes they do), I don't see what other options I might have.

Has this ever happened to anyone, or do you know anyone who has had this problem? I didn't even know this was a possibility!

I'm sorry for the long post, but I thought I'd share my thoughts, frustrations and concerns with anyone who might be going through the same I am right now. Thank you for your patience!!

Hi

I work in a termination clinic and this has never happened with my doctor. So no this is not common and maybe the doctor that you saw just did not have enough experience. The only time that its a problem to find a cervix is when someone actually had a cervical operation and the doctor closed it. In that case you would not be able to do a medical termination anyway.

But you will be fine with the medical termination. It will take a bit longer but you will be ok. Make sure not to miss your checkup a few weeks later.
