Hi, guys. My brother has Tourette syndrome and he will start with treatment very soon. His doctor recommends behavior psychotherapy, but he would also introduce some medications. I would like to know what drug therapy is for Tourette syndrome. I would really appreciate all your efforts in replying. Thanks in advance.

Hello. Drugs can be used in treating Tourette syndrome. There is no special drug that treats Tourette. In this situation, other medications that are used for some serious illness are used for this purpose. Neuroleptics that are used for severe psychoses are also useful here. Those are Haloperidol, Thorazine, Risperidal, Mellaril, etc. Antidepressants can also be used – Lithium, Paxil, Norpramin, Prozac, etc. Sedatives like Valium and Xanax can be good. Other groups are: anticonvulsants, CNS stimulants, alpha and beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, etc. I hope your brother will feel better.
