Well, to tell you immediately that this smoking doesn’t help at all, considering that it is smoking that brought this older person where s/he is.

Quitting smoking is an imperative for getting better or prolonging life with emphysema. It certainly can’t reverse the damage that has already been done but can stop further damage.

What kind of treatment is this person on? That may be an important factor when talsking about prognosis.

Prognosis depends upon many other factors like age, the severity of damage done to the lungs, treatments, alternative treatments and life style i.e. if the person stops or continues to smoke.

Emphysema eventually leads to complications like recurrent chest inflammations, flu, pneumonia, high blood pressure in the lung’s arteries, problems with heart, etc

The prognosis may not be so good with a person who is 76 old and smokes. It may be up to 4 years or so. Many people who manage to change their living habits and who get proper treatment manage to live longer though.

The question is how willing is a 76 year-old person willing to fight or make changes.

Alternative treatments like acupuncture, aromatherapy or Chinese herbs are often found helpful.
