I have been dealing with dry heaves for a few years now. Mine comes on when I get moving in the morning or at night when I start to cook. The smell of food sometimes brings it on. When I first get up in the morn, I can pretty much tell if it's going to happen cause I can feel the nausea coming on. I'm not the best of eaters, but if I don't eat a little something, it comes on full force, then I get the shakes, and dry mouth. Makes you not even want to move. It's not every day, but lately, more than not. As long as I'm sitting still, no problems. Sorry for you all, but glad I'm not alone!

My issue with this APIs also almost certainly stress related. A year or so ago I was going through a legal issue and would wake up every morning and dry-heave. Since the issue was resolved in my favor, it doesn't happen nearly as often. I also have a high stress job and mornings of days that I have a lot going on I will also dry heave as I'm getting ready to shower. Once I do, I'm usually fine and don't have any further issues that day. Getting a full night sleep definitely helps. I've also found an amazing supplement called L-Theanine, which is a green tea extract that promotes relaxation, relieves anxiety, and has no side effects. I've taken it every day for over a year now and it has been life changing.

So far I haven't noticed any relation to exercise, although depression has occurred in the similar period. Ive had it for half a year, and its numerous times a day. Once it starts I cant stop it, only drinking something ends I suggesting dehydration. I also have poor vitamin D levels. So I'm assuming vitamin deficiency and oddly slight dehydration seems to effect it.

In relation to my above post, ive also noticed if I keep my mouth open for too long, like dentist etc I start retching, now this has psychologically progressed to when I see ppl eat I begin to heave. Again only liquid stops it. Occasionally ive thrown up if ive just eaten.this is remarkably hard to explain.

Wow! Mine happens while brushing my teeth too! And that's pretty much the only time. Has been happening a few months now. Have changed my toothpaste 3 times thinking it was that. I'm really stumped. Wierd! Guess it's time to maybe bring it up to my doc.

Same. Have you discovered any cause or quit smoking ? Did it help. My gagging started about a week after my brand of cigarettes changed their filter.

I've had the same problem since I was a teenager. I'm 32 now. I get sick almost every single morning. Had tons of tests done, they can't find any reason for it. I'm told it's anxiety related. I'd rather not kill my liver with Zofran every day so now I just suffer through it. But if you live in a state with legal marijuana, I suggest trying that. Doctors will even tell you that'll kill the nausea and vomiting lickity split. Hugs to all of you suffering through this nightmare.

Hi Big10 and everyone else, I have the exact same symptoms right down to gagging at the dentist, before/during sport, in the shower and during meetings. I am no expert but I believe all of our stories are very much a case of stress related anxiety. Even the food being used as a mental "crutch" to help get through the day.
For me this became more severe and began to cause dark thoughts. I went to my doctor and was referred to a psychologist (all free in Australia). Once I realised that the cause was clearly anxiety, I was able to alter my lifestyle and use strategies to deal with it.
I am still not 100% rid of it but much better. As a side note the process made me realise that my father was struggling with the same symptoms but had never spoken to me about them or attributed them to anxiety or mental, he also blamed it on something physical.
