My best answer is anxiety. Upon awakening I immediately think of all I need to do and it react with wreching, coughing and a meltdown. I take Xanax, but it doesn't help in the am.

I have been experiencing the dry heaves for about three years now. Usually in the morning when I don't eat fast enough after waking up. I need to consume a piece of fruit within 15 minutes of being awake or the heaves begin. It will also happen randomly throughout the day, usually accompanied by hunger and without warning. Trouble is.... the gagging is violent and LOUD!! I seriously sound like a person does after being sick and still trying but there's nothing left. It's really embarassing as I can't predict or control the aggressive gag action and sound! My family is used to it, they run and thrust fruit at me..... my students however..... think I'm going to barf and so do I!!!!!

Hi I have had dry heaves but thought they were assocated with caffeine and I'm now sure about it because I quit caffeine on July 5th of 2015. I just drank 2 cups of coffee I decided to splurge on the this weekend and lo and behold there's my dry heave again. It only lasts for a few seconds but I'll test it again now I'm quite sure it's the caffeine.

Not a single dry heave for over a year and now with two cups of coffee back to back here the heaves are again.

Kick out the caffeine! There are many health benefits to doing this. At least stop consuming it for a period and then test yourself after you have quit for a while. It may give you peace of mind. And yes I was concerned that the gagging reflex was a symptom of something more serious. Now I know...... it IS a relief. Cheers!

Wow, you have a lot on your mind going on, that cannot help either. Hows your weight? just a question. I'm curious as I think some of these things are 'Diet & weight' related. For myself (not perfect) I drink too much since my divorce, have too teenagers that I support & love. Just gotta keep going! all the best.

****I HAVE THE CURE****
I went through a traumatic event earlier this year and approximately 1-2 months after the incident happened, I started getting a random need to gag and even at times dry heave for no apparent reason. Nothing would come up when i would dry heave and these attacks would come on out of nowhere...I wouldn't have any nausea or acid reflux associated so that ruled out GERDS Disease. I had done some reading on stress and anxiety and how it can manifest itself in the body in different forms that sometimes show as physical pain or physical symtoms. I went to my Doctor and spoke to my friend who was an ER Nurse. I was told there was nothing wrong with me physically however the gagging continued and even got more frequent. After my research, I came to the conclusion that it was how anxiety was manifesting itself in my body, although I didn't feel stressed out or anxious.

So.....I began learning how to meditate (there are numerous tutorials on youtube) and I started reading books on getting in touch with the mind-body connection and how to train and focus the mind: "The Monk who Sold his Ferrari" by Robin Sharma is a great start. I try to meditate 10-20 mins a day and since, starting 3 weeks ago, the gagging has completely disappeared. This has worked for me and not only is
the gagging gone, but I've actually felt a different in myself mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

I recomend you try this....and hope this works for any of you that are experiencing this.
Merry Christmas and All the best in 2017!

Have had the dry retch off and on for a few years now and have come to the conclusion it is due to sinus running down back of my throat. There is a spot in the throat that triggers the retching. If I can sleep propped up I do not have this problem. Have tried taking sinus meds and it stops but if you take it too much you could wreck your nose and airways. Propped up seems the safest method and the only time I do it now is if I have slipped down the pillows during the night.

I dry heave when I'm cold. I've done this since I was a teenager. I'm 41 now.
I asked my doctor about it and he said it's due to post nasal drip. When it's cold, my sinuses drain to the back of my throat which in turn makes me gag because I can't breathe. He suggested I take a Sudafed when I know that cold weather is going to affect my sinus drainage. It's helped, but if I forget it does happen again. Hope this helps someone.
