Happy to have Mirena out of me! I had Mirena inserted in 7/07. I had it removed on 7/13/09—YEAH!. My sister, who is a Sonographer (she does ultrasounds), noticed my weight gain and that I haven’t been myself for a while (moody). She said that so many women complain to her about Mirena when she is doing ultrasounds for them. Most of them tell her about the weight they have gained and their moodiness. My sister said… “You workout all of time and watch what you eat. You shouldn’t be gaining weight.” I was 150 lbs when Mirena was inserted and two years later, I weigh 168 lbs. I workout intensely five or more days a week and earned the 2008 Olympian title at my gym (which took a year of hard work to acquire), but my weight keeps creeping up no matter how hard I try. My workouts keep getting harder because my body is heavier… it’s so frustrating! Following my sister’s advice, I decided to do some research on Mirena and found this site. THANK YOU! I was so relieved to know that I wasn’t crazy and that others have experienced the same symptoms as me. Here are some of the other symptoms that I experienced from Mirena: constant bloating, I ached from my hips down to my knees (which I attributed to my hard workouts, but was wrong), mood swings, hot flashes in the middle of the night, acne on my chin, dark hair growth on my chin, dull cramps in my lower stomach, back ache, fatigue, fluttering in my stomach (which felt like a baby), sensitive breasts, pain during intercourse, spotting after intercourse (almost every time). I’m not sure how long it will take me to get my body back, but am so glad that I’m on my way. I’d like to thank everyone who posted symptoms on this site, you’ve changed my life.

I got my Mirena inserted in April of 2008. It was some what painful during the insertion and the rest of that evening. I was a little sore the next day and then after that no pain. My gyno told me that I may bleed or spot for up to 3 months after the insertion, however; I bled for 5 months. Now that the bleeding has stopped I have noticed that I have had increased vaginal discharge that is ANNOYING! It does not have a foul odor its just kinda sticky and ANNOYING. However I will say that this thing WORKS! I guess there are side effects to almost EVERY type of birth control. The good thing about the Mirena is I don't have to remember to take it or change it. I don't need to have repeat doctors visits to get shots!!! I have not gained any weight. In fact I have lost 20 lbs in the last few months. Hopefully I will not experience this "hair thinning" others have experienced!! But I haven't noticed any hair thinning in the last 5 months so I assume that my hair will be fine. Good luck to anyone interested in giving the Mirena a try. :-P

Oh my goodness!!! I'm so glad that I'm not going crazy!!! I was asking myself why I keep gaining weight. Not only that, my bloodpressure has gone up to borderline. My doctor said that my periods were going to be crazy at first and then get shorter NOT I get my periods fot two weeks every month and I never got pain before now I have to take pills for the cramps. I have also noticed that I have lost of interest in sex.... My husband thought I was going into menopause but I'm only 26yrs old. He says that I'm really moody. I can't believe all the details that they leave out and don't tell you until you are going through them. I'm going to take this thing out ASAP!!

8-| well, I had my device in since January 2009 after a seris of hospital visits and heavy bleeding the option was to have a hysterectomy...and 12 weeks off work after having so much time off with 'womens' complaints I was happy to be given an alternative as I am quite an active person walking with my dogs & swimming. Having gone through a knee op and also an abolatation to remove mu womb lining I had put some weight on, but I have gainned almost 20 lbs in 9 months and feel I am ready to give birth I am bloated and boobs are so big they just look like ballons being 5ft 3" high I somewhat look like a barrel and my sex drive has dropped - it was a shame as my wedding I felt awful and now I feel teary and cannot concentrate on my studies. I want the thing out but I am due to go on holiday (honeymoon) in November and just hope that I can return to normal in the next few months while not having the heavy periods & pain I had. However, my skin, the bloating and I have to shave my legs every other day along with loss of sex drive while dieting to extreme with lack of concentration and being tired & teary has got to come to an end. I will post a reply in a few months to advise what progress I have made.

I haven't be able to find any answers anywhere, maybe someone here can help. I have had my mirena since may 2008. I didn't start having a period until April 2009 and ever since then it has been regular. Last Tues (nov 24th) my mirena came out. I started what I thought was my period soon after and bleed for 5/6 days. I finally got in to see the doctor today. The urine pg test was neg but I really feel as though I may be pregnant. The last time was husband and I "did the deed" was on Nov 14th. The DR said it was too early to tell if I was pregnant but that sometimes if you get pregnant with the mirena in the body will reject it. I am having an ultrasound in a few days to make sure the mirena didn't do any damage on the way out and I was wondering if a pregnancy can be detected by ultrasound this early? I really don't want anymore kids, I thought the mirena was a great way to go per my DR, and now I'm not so sure what to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! -Thanks!

I just got a mirena put in and It was so painful, the cramping was unbearable I was crying in bed for like 2 hours. the pain lasted for about 18 hours, but it got a little better each hour. I just hope that getting it out is not as painful. Did anyone else experience pain like this? I also can't seem to find the strings to check it. Is this unusual, should I be concerned?

i have had my mirena in for only a month now, so may be too soon to tell, but so far its been pretty good. it was very painful when i first got it fitted, worst pain in my life but im used to pretty serious cramping, that lasted for about a week, which probably wasnt helped by getting a period (probably due to me just coming of my pill, so was due for one) after that i have had the occasional twinge but nothing too bad. as for side affects, i cant say i have gained weight from it, any weight i have gained is more likely from it being christmas time and consuming a copius amount of food lol! my appertite does actually seem to have subsided as well, have gone days without really feeling i need to eat and usually i will eat everything in my fridge! my breasts have gotten bigger which is not a bad thing going from an A to a B and what i have to say is the most unusual syptom is constantly erect nipples! however this could possibly be due to a huge increase in sex drive and therefore being constantly turned on by anything! lucky i have a boyfriend ha, as for periods no sign for couple fo weeks (which is good for me used to getting a period every few days) i had a tiny spot of blood in my discharge once and that was it! i also can say tat so far i have had no mood swings or depressive feelings, which is the reason i kept having to change pill before and was recommended this one, though i do have to say i will get a bit weepy at films more easy now but i dont mind that as long as im alone lol. so heres to hoping i continue getting the good side affects, i find that every contraception depends on the individual and im sorry to here it isnt working for some people, but i hope this has helped anyway :-) xx

I had my last child two years ago.. A month after she was born, I was already back to my clothes size.. Wanting to make sure there was no more pregnancies, my fiance and I decided to try mirena... Almost as soon as I got it I rapidly gained weight... I've done everything to lose it and I can't even drop a pound... I also have a severe case of acne that gets worse by the day... My face and especially my back.. It's absolutley disgusting... While Mirena in most cases illiminates periods, I would much rather suffer with them then to have the side effects it's caused for me... I go in a week to have it removed and I can't wait... My doctor told me that it has nothing to do with my weight gain, but we will see....

Hey everyone,
I am a 15 year old girl who had to have mirena inserted about just over a month ago due to long lasting and heavy periods. I was put on about 4 different types of the pill including Yasmin and Yaz but found that i experienced depression and increased appitite and they didnt fix my bleeding problems. The Mirena was a last resort. As i am so young it would be extremely difficult and painful to insert so i had the mirena inserted under a general anesthetic. I experienced mild period like cramps and bleeding for about a week. I have had one period since having merina inserted and it was pretty much just spotting. It is too early for me to determine if the merina is good for me but i just hope it works! Does anyone think that it is bad to have a mirena at 15? and also is it bad for my health and is it possible to affect my chances of conceiving later in life?
Thank You

I am a 24 year old and Ive had the Mirena for almost two months now. I dont know if what im having is from the IUD or not. Well first off Ive had heavy bleeding since having it put in, and severe pain on only my right side. Its a sharp cramping pain and when i dont have the sharp pains, its a dull nagging pain. But I went back to my ob and they said everything with the Mirena looked fine and told me to take 800mg of Motrin. Well if that worked I wouldnt have gone to the doctor again. i thought it might be a cyst on my ovary but they did an ultrasound and saw nothing. The pain has not let up and itm very sick of being in pain all of the time. I do feel out of it, kinda cloudy headed and I have noticed that Im starting to loose loads of hair. The pain is just starting to scare me. I really dont know what to do, I like not having worry about getting pregnant or having to take a pill everyday, but i dont know if the pain, the constant bleeding and being out of it is worth it. Please Let me know if anyone else has experienced pain on only one side of their lower abdomen or what someone else think that might be. THANK YOU

Hi Folks,
I am a mother of two, I had mirena inserted in 2004 while at university. I was then 124lbs and 5.2 feet at the end of three years I steadily gained weight to a tune of 41lbs weighing 145lbs. During this time I ate healthily and joined the campus gym which I used three times a week nonetheless the weight gain was continuous. My OBGYN said that that the dosage of hormone was too low to cause weight gain and the poly-cystic ovaries I developed was very common and will be of no consequence since I did not want any children.
I eventually removed it in 2007 and without changing my life style I gradually lost weight, down to 123lbs. In November 2009 although my husband and I used condom I had a pregnancy scare so I opted to put it in again. It has only been nine months (30th November, 2009- 12th August, 2010) and I have gained 15lbs. So now I am convinced that the mirena is the cause.
The benefits are of course: it is a good form of contraception and the diminished periods. Which has been reduced to two days of light pink coloration in my normal discharge (no more pads, tampons or taking pills). On the down side during the first few 1-3 months I felt a sharp pain during orgasms which have now subsided. However the decreased libido still persist, my nipples hurt when they are touched not to mention I am uncomfortable being naked and intimate because of the visible extra pounds. I have limited my interaction with friends when people started commenting on my weight. We own a beach house that I have not visited it in months. I really do not want people to see me in this over-sized state. My bra size have gone from34C to 36DD and my waist from 28" to 34" and my inner thighs are now rubbing,my clothes do not fit, every week I have to put more and more clothes aside. Eating healthy and exercise are not helping.
I have previously been described as the life of the party by everyone who knows me but of late I have been very depressed and tired all of the time with the occasional heart palpitations . I have scheduled an appointment with my OBGYN to remove the mirena. I need to get my life back. I would not write off mirena as a form of contraceptive for those of you who do not experience weight gain or are comfortable with the extra pounds. However for me ( being very short ) the rapid weight gain and related issues are not a good trade off.

I have been reading all of these posts about Mirena. When I first got mine in Jan of 09 it was fine. I didnt really even feel it go in. No periods was wonderful to me. Didnt notice any problems. As my husband had left me and I was not sexually active until recently. Once I started having sex I would have short periods with severe cramping. Now I am unsure of wth is going on with my body. In the last week I have had leekage from my right breasts with my breasts being abnormally huge. My bf even noticed how big they were when they normally arent quite that huge. He could barely brush by me without being about to cry. Last weekend I had had the worst emotional day in my life. I didnt know why I was crying. Why I was upset. And I couldnt do anything about. I felt completely and utterly hormonal when I havent been ever in my life that bad. I am tired all the time. I get up and 2 hours later I want to sleep. Its rediculous I feel like I'm pregnant but I have this thing in so that shouldnt be a worry now should it. I am unsure of what is going on and need advice on what to do...
