After giving birth to my for year old son, my gynae advised me to try Mirena, I was reluctant because was not sure is I still want to try for another child. At the end of last we decided that the two boys are enough and there will not be addition to the family. I thought it was a perfect time to insert a Mirena. I spoke to my husabnd and had our first appointment with the gynae, got a prescription, got the Mirena and had it inserted in March 2011. I started by being emotional and sensitive, low self drive and moody. I noticed gain weight then started diet and exercise. Three months from the date I had inserted Mirena I researched the effects of the product and many women had gained wait within the first six month, I had already gaineg 8kg in 4months. I had it removed 30 June 2011, 2 minute painless procedure and no bleeding. I was very relieved.

I had a Mirena iud for over a year. My Gyno had difficulty inserting it and it was very painful and I bled alot at the time of insertion. This did create a fear of removal.
However after experiencing many of the side effects you listed above, I removed the Mirena myself. I simply tugged on the cords and it came out effortlessly. I suspect that it had moved and so was easily removed.
I would not recomend your wife removing it yourself, I think she should go to her DR. But removing it was as simple as removing a tampon and painless in my experience.
I am slowly starting to feel much better and my body is returning to its normal healthy and responsive self once again.
i hope this helps.

My OBGYN said the same thing of yours and told me to get it. She really pushes for this IUD. I am 47 yo. I don't think I am in menopause, yet. Still can't take that chance and the horror stories are too many. I have trouble wearing tampons as well. So I foreseen real trouble with this. Also all my life have very short periods like 2 to 3 days with one day brake within the period no much pain. Yes the first day is bad. My whole issue is having something releasing hormones in my body. The copper IUD sounds just as bad.
I do want my period though. I know many women find it a nuisance but I have learn to cope with it as part of being a woman and I guess the duration makes a huge difference.

I had mirena put in at the beginning of May, 2012. Im 46, obviously finished having kids and I was/am beginning to experience the not-too-nice side effects of perimenopause. That meant I was getting very heavy periods, sometimes with a 5 day break in between them and then WHAM! another period lasting 15 days. I was drained.
My OB/gyn wanted to put my on mirena two years ago, but I went online and read horror stories about constant bleeding etc. I declined. Two years later I was back in her office. I couldn't TAKE it any more. She installed the Mirena. Putting it in was nothing more than uncomfortable. I went before work, popped a few advil first and it took no more than 15 minutes. I had spotting all day and some menstrual cramps but I drove an hour to work and worked all day no issue.Spotting continued with no other symptoms except that i was "aware" that the mirena was there...that was odd. Spotting lasted continuously for about 3 weeks and soon rolled into what I guess was my period. Period lasted 16 days...with no sign of letting up. Then, one day it just stopped. I had a few weeks of no spotting and then seemed to get my period AGAIN. I had very very very sore breasts and super sensitive nipples.Sex...no pain, no discomfort. Partner felt no strings. In June, I got my period again...lasted about 16 days but was so light and faint I didn't even need a pantyliner. No other symptoms. It's now coming up on 3 months and I have no signs of pms or impending period. I haven't experienced any other symptoms such as weight gain, hair loss or headaches. So far I have to say that although the constant spotting was a HUGE pain and I couldn't stand it, now at 3 months I have nothing. No period, no pms symptoms and no spotting or bleeding. The only "side effect" I can muster and I could be wrong about this one...is that my hair has grown like crazy. Must have grown an inch a month since getting Mirena. Ditto my finger nails. I have no idea if it's related or not but it's worth noting that while pregnant I experienced the same thing so that just may be ME.If this month goes by without spotting or bleeding then I can report that I am 100% satisfied. This is for sure something I should have done years ago.The information on Mirena is pretty comprehensive. I'd encourage all women considering Mirena to read the info your doctor will give you. Remember, the internet is full of horror stories about everything...including childbirth. It's not right for all women...just as most BC isn't right for ALL women. It's difficult to search for other women's experiences with Mirena who aren't postpartum. Having had 6 kids myself, I have to say that that DOES change everything. It takes months and months for your body to balance out after pregnancy and childbirth so much of what you may be experiencing is tied in to that. For women like me, done with kids and perimenopause it's wonderful. No accidental pregnancies and no periods. I plan to have a new one installed in 5 yrs and ride out the whole menopause thing. That's my experience ....truly hope it helps.
Considering the cost of this device I am not sure I really want to risk it.

I agree - not inexpensive investment but it's good for 5 years that's really only $10 a month for complete piece of mind. For me, it offered all I wanted. No pregnancy, no symptoms and no periods. I never used to have issues with cycle. I was once very regular, bleed for 4 days no big deal...as I got older and in particular once I hit around 42 that all changed for me. My periods were never ending and completely unpredictable. Im a happy Mirena user. Hope you find what suits you best.
