I am 53 years old and was diagnosed with ADD 6 years ago. My doctor prescribed Focalin XR, and it was wonderful! I never had to adjust my dosage or timing oce she got me to 20mg each morning. I had no bad side effects, and my ability to stay on task was amazing!
This year, my insurance discontinued coverage of Focalin, even it's generic. I have been on Ritalin for 2 months and it is just barely ok. We are still adjusting my dosages and timing, but I am truly struggling at work to maintain my usual level of productivity. If we can't get me back to the level of efficiency that everyone has come to expect from me, I am fearful that I may lose my position. Not a comfortable position!
So, for me, Focalin XR is not so new that it is an unknown. I'd go back to it in a heartbeat!

Just to share our experience. My 5yr old is being taken off focalin in because of some of these same side effects. Major personally changes that seemed like depression and zombie effects were a little scary. Also had sleeping problems and even some night time hallucinations. We are starting on Concerta today in hopes of better results.

I have taken focalin for roughly 8 years now. I found the main side effect that bothers me the most was loss of appetite. I found myself rather malnutritioned but for the first few years it worked perfectly fine- but it was only when I was s in elementary school so my age might if had something to do with it. It was on 20mg extended release.

Don't recommend focalin if you're not a doctor. After switching from 30mg Vyvanse (caused red hands, mood swings, loss of appetite, sub par effects) to 10mg focalin, I experienced worse red hands with correlation to a blood pressure reading of 155/90, worse and more frequent mood swings, headaches, and even worse effects on my wakefulness and attentiveness Then Vyvanse could provide. Focalin is not for everyone and based off my experience thus far is the worst CNS stimulant I have ever tried

HI I NOTICE THAT MY SON IS ABLE TO FOCUS BETTER AND HE IS DOING BETTER IN SCHOOL, HOWEVER I HAVE BEEN NOTICING SOME CHANGES IN HIS BEHAVIOR. MY SON IS 6 YEARS OLD AND NOT ONLY DOES HE SUFFER FROM ADHD BUT HE ALSO HAS AUTISM AND IS ON THE HIGH END OF THE SPECTRUM IF THAT MAKES ANY SINCE. MY SON IS BECOMING DEPRESSED AND VERY MEAN AT TIMES. I DONT NO IF ITS THE MEDS OR JUST THE AUTISM OVER LAPING THE ADHD. ANYWAY I WAS READING THE COMMENTS AND THOUGHT I WOULD REPLY TO THAT

Compared to what other medications?

You seem extra sensitive to stimulants. Have you tried a non-stimulant like Strattera?

For me in particular, I only find myself short tempered and irritable when I don't take enough of my ADHD meds. If I don't get enough sleep or stay up too late I need more of the meds to get me back to my normal. If I don't have enough, I am irritable. Like being overtired.

Maybe try the instant release in the morning and early afternoon so its effects are over by bedtime?
My biggest problem with ADHD medications is lack of sleep. (I naturally already have a hard time sleeping.) If I don't get enough sleep and I stay at the same level of meds then my dose is too low since I need to make up for lack of sleep. I usually would end up tired or exhausted if I don't sleep enough for an extended period of time. Which causes anxiety, irritability, mood swings, etc. For me XR versions of meds lasted too long and killed my sleep patterns.
