my father-in-law's both legs were amputated due to gangrene. he is 67 years old and his one leg is fine after the amputation but his left leg has gone bad. its black and has a foul smell. he does not want to amputate again and he is in so much pain. tell me what can i do and what will happen if he does not amputate?

Hello, sorry to hear that someone close to you has such severe problems. People with diabetes often get their legs amputated because tissue simply dies off because cells do not absorb sugar hence there is no energy for them to run and make new cells so gangrene shows up. I think that if his left leg is black and has foul smell that i should be amputated again. Doctors usually do this because once gangrene starts to catch a limb, there is no cure for it other than to remove the infected part. Only thing you could do is to talk him into surgery again because if it spreads on his abdomen there is no salvation for him. And it will spread. it spreads fast. If he does not want to go to surgery , you have to tell him he is not going to make it. Get some powerful pain killers and let him spends his last days with the people that love him.
