I had a 3 disc laminectomy in 1983 (L3-4, L4-5, L5-S1). I suffer from Degenerative Disc Disease, Sciatica, Spinal Stenosis, am on 6 tabs of 10 mg Methadone daily. The Spinal Cord Stimulator did not work for me. I suffer from Peripheral Neuropathy. This pain stems from both my back and because of neuropathic pain. No medication works. My Pain Management Specialist is scheduling me for the trial period for the Morphine Pump. The literature does not give me a lot of hope. Some says it works, others say it doesn't. Who do I believe. This is my last option. In your site's opinion, does the Morphine Pump work or not.  Should I have it done or simply continue with the methadone.  Will the Pump improve my quality of life?  Or Not?

I had the same surgery as you did one in 2004 second one in 2005 because the first one did not work. I have been fighting the pain for years my doc was said he did not want to do the pain pump for me, I know 2 people (men) that had the pain pump and it did not work out well. I suffer with the degenerative disc diease and spinal stenosis as well I was on the pain patch, 80mg of oxycotin, and percocet I also had the stimulator and nothing seem to help me, I was on all the pain meds for years I was so tired of it all and the pain I weaned myself off it all and now I only take percocet, and try to deal with the pain I have good days and bad. My doc did not think the pain pump was a good thing for me. I do know that there is a trial with the pain pump so I hope your doc told you that you can try it first to see if it helps your pain. I understand what you are going through, I can only tell you that my doc did not think it was a good thing for me to do he said it does not work for a lot of people I know the man that had it done was not happy at all and his quality of life was not better. It may work for you because you have neuropathic pain I do not have that and the 2 people I know that had the pain pump do not have that. Good Luck

I had a 3 disc laminectomy which was 100% successful. Between 1991 and 2004, I was assaulted 6x on my job all to the lower back. I am now on 100% permanent social security disability. I have taken every narcotic imaginable and have been on Methadone since 1998. My quality of life is non-existent. In that I do not work, I am homebound. The doc told me that there is a trial period and my pain must be SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED. If not, the trial will be considered a failure. To date, nothing has worked. As for the neuropathic pain, no medication has worked (Neurontin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, MicroVas, Medanx, Laser Therapy). My foot pain is a combination/result of neuropathic pain and low back pain. If the MP works, great. My doc says its a 50/50. No one can give me any guarantee. I hope it works. If not, then its back to the Methadone. Care to share your e-mail?
