Male, South Asian, 51:

My first research in the two years since I noticed a lump brought me to this site. Not to disrespect so many people's pain or confusion or anxiety but I find it comforting to find company. Thanks to all the folks that have posted here about their condition.

The growth on the part of my skull termed "forehead boss" is hard bone, about and inch above the right eyebrow, and doesn't hurt at all. But it is distinct and has been attracting a lot of avoidable attention. (Lately, I've been tiring of hearing myself go, "my horns, dear" ... and I'm not such a witty guy really. I end up feeling embarrassed. Rarely are they amused. I wonder if they think it's contagious or perhaps they want to avoid a funeral). Anyway.... the Wiki links someone posted led me to several articles that again led to a labyrinth ... and so on. I gather this condition is more common in 30 to 50 year olds. There is higher incidence among women. [Then again, the cases posted here seem so varied, they may be pointing to extremely different conditions).

In my case, I suspect it is a benign skull tumor, an osteoma. Needless to say, I'd rather trust medical opinion - and a second one too - than conclude anything. I found this site interesting: ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed
I hope - whoever you are and whatever your problem - you will have the means and the will to seek medical help. Meanwhile, don't kill yourself about it and keep singing in the rain, go to an obscure place, chat with the ticket collector, ask for that tax return extension .... Hopefully, you'll find a better quip to curious questions and a better delivery than mine. :-) Cheers!

I know this thread is old and I realize that everyone who posted before may no longer check this page. I, too, have a "horn" ... it is on the right side of my forehead, between my eyebrow and hairline. It has gotten much larger and I have had it for a year and a half now. I had it looked at by both a General Practicioner Doctor and a plastic surgeon. I thought that originally it was a cyst. It is, in fact, bone. It is solid and hard. It looks like a large bump, like I hit my head and have a knot from it.
It can be removed easily for all of those who have it at the hairline. A dermatologist or plastic surgeon can do it. For those, like me, where it is in the middle, it can be shaved down, but will leave a scar if you do not have a qualified plastic surgeon perform the surgery. He/she will cut at the hairline, insert a small camera and shave the bone down, leaving an incision at the hair line that should not leave any scarring.

I was the one who posted this, before I registered as "Passenger". I cannot understand dispute the prudence of the site moderator not posting the link I had included. The link was educative and had no commercial potential. Needless to say, I had no ulteriortive except to guide people to info I founfd useful. Ehile I respect the site's policy and accept the need to weed out links, I think a blanket embargo serves no need. Itself benefited fe the Wiki link posted here by another subscriber. Wiki is ok, I guess? So then, it's ok fore to go Wiki and edit that article and include the one that Steadyhealth found objectionable?

Diagnosis:
1. Your primary care physician, if worth a nickel, should recommend a scan of your skull.
2. For adults: you likely have an osteoma. They are typically benign, but have your doctor make the call.
3. For kids: relax, wait until you are done growing. In some cases you will 'grow over' the osteoma. I know it sucks to be picked on and called 'horn boy' and be ashamed of how your head looks, but would you rather have a scar your whole life, or wait until you are an adult and perhaps grow over your osteoma?  You may end up needing work done as an adult, but at least give your  body time to try to work this out on its own.  But make sure to at least have it scanned by your doc.

Removal:
1. Always go the plastic surgeon route. The other guys are crazy. Don't hire a mechanic to do your taxes, and don't ask a neurosurgeon or general doctor to remove something like this.  They will like the 'ear to ear' approach, and can be very insensitive and overkill, resulting in a horrible scar and even a gouge too deep into your skull bone as they remove this thing.  But plastic surgeons understand the importance of minimizing the cut, and they also are good at stitching up right and minimizing the scar. Plastic surgeons can either do this personally, or know a plastic surgeon who specializes in ear/ nose/ throat and can recommend you.
2. Even if a plastic surgeon does the work, this procedure should be billable to insurance, since technically its not known to be benign until its removed and shaved off.

Good luck, and accept the tradeoff: scar or bump.

In my case, I choose scar.

It is nice to know that I am not alone in this.  I have 3 large lumps on my forehead.  1 in the center which is the largest and 1 over each eyebrow.  They are all very hard bony lumps.  I am starting to notice 2 more at my hairline.  This makes 5 lumps.  I hate taking pictures anymore.  My son is 2 months old and my wife is constantly wanting family pictures. I am at a loss.  I do not know what to do.  Is there a chance that these lumps will go a way on their own.  I figure the answer is no considering they are bone.  Help!!

I am curious as to what is really the cause, I have many lumps appearing on the top of my head its almost like a crater with different sizes all over and they can be felt extremely well on the right side of my skull *I think they are actually bigger on the right*.  I have been noticing though lately bad pain behind my right eye and migraines usually on the right side. . . I too was told by my doctor "its just fatty growth, its nothing" and now reading all of this is making me wonder,  I know if a lot of us are haven the same thing it can't just be fatty tissues! I am 24, and 3-4 years ago I had a perfectly smooth head, I am starting to wonder if the doctors don't even know what it is so they are just saying its this or that and not bothering to actually look into it!

I have this lump 2 or 3 years ago and it is getting bigger and i went to the doctor for check-up and he said it is an exostoses. I went for another doctor and he said the same thing and they said to me, we did not recommend to remove because it is not giving any health problem.  Well, i can't sleep well because of this thing and i decided to go for plastic surgery. The plastic surgeon said, it is not a growing bone but a lymphoma. It is a tissue or fat that is getting bigger. The surgeon told me to remove it and he will do the operation this coming July. About the payment, i have to pay almost $2000.00 but can pay medisave and the rest is cash. I go for an specialist that's why it is a bit expensive.

I've had a lump on my head growing slowly over the passed year. The doctor said its very common, usually non-malignant, and people get them removed for cosmetic reasons, rather than anything else. Having an x-ray next week...
