I suppose that is just a method for dealing with the cancer cells. The whole point behind the stent and drug release is that the medication affects the affected area in regular intervals and in the shortest possible way, since the stent is already at the spot. This provides your mother with the most effective appliance of the medication possible. As for paclitaxel, it is one of the meds used in chemo therapy.
