I am a 50 year old male. I have had this heart flutter occasionally which takes my breath away slightly. I have had this for the past 3 nights and also during the day. I currently have an ear infection. When I sleep at night (with my ear infection) I can hear my blood pumping in my ear. When the heart flutter occurs I hear the blood stop pumping during the flutter. Interesting that the heart does not pump blood properly during the flutter yet we are still not feeling any negative effects like passig out or pain. I used to be a body builder and in 1996 I experienced Atrial Fibrilations. I also have "Right Bundle Block" meaning that the electric timing is off in my heart causing it to skip a beat. I am on a very successful Alkalizing program yet it seems that the tremendous stress I am under overrides much of my healthy ways. I can only imagine what would happen to my health if i was not on my program. Stress I learned is 50% of our health and if we cannot keep stress under wraps we can "Worry Ourselves Sick."

Your all showing that you are Taching...
Lay off Caffine
Suphedrine
Sugar
Anything that will get your heart rate up. For those of you with slight symptoms that should fix you up if it persists see an Electrophysiologist. He's a cardiologist specializing in the electrical signals in your heart. That's what's causing the irregular heart beats.

I am 21 years old, female, and have just recently starting feeling a sudden onset of fluttering in my heart. I'll be sitting or laying down when all of a sudden my heart rate seems to spike and I feel the fluttering happen. I feel scared immediately upon this happening. It shortly afterwords slows down back to normal, as where most of you describe yours to continue for longer periods of time. It sure is scary when its reguarding your heart. It's very discouraging it sounds to not have doctors not take your side. I have not been to one either, this is new to me ..and just found out my sister has the same feelings. I dont think its a lot to worry about other than knowing were now all at risk for higher heart problems and even strokes. I always said before that if something bad happens to me it'll be a stroke, since I have awful migraines where I lose feeling to my left side. and now this. Well good luck to all of you, and take care, continue to eat well and get exercise I know I need to start doing more of this. Im only 140lbs and stay skinny even while eating unhealthy and less exercise. I'll have to start now in order to prevent huge problems later in life.

I have also just had this happen and it has been happening randomly for the past three months. Last week I actually passed out in class and my teacher (who is a Nurse Practitioner) was really worried it was a ventricular arrythmia and MADE me go to the doctor. I went today, just got home and he sent me for a referal and I will have to wear a heart monitor for 5 days that will record these episodes so they can see exactly what is happening at the time of attack. It is scarey but as a nursing student I highly suggest going to your doctor. Also keep a journal of all of these episodes, the dates, times, what you were doing at the time, if you did anything before, what you've eaten that day......A Complete Blood Count, Glucose (blood sugar), and Thyroid test would also be a good idea to make sure everything is within normal limits and to put your mind at rest. A stress test could also be beneficial....

I have also just had this happen and it has been happening randomly for the past three months but is happening more frequently and more intensley the last couple of weeks. Last week I actually passed out in class and my teacher (who is a Nurse Practitioner) was really worried it was a ventricular arrythmia and MADE me go to the doctor. This was the first time I've passed out and it was very scarey, I had no control. I went to the doctors today, just got home and he sent me for a referal and I will have to wear a heart monitor for 5 days that will record these episodes so they can see exactly what is happening at the time of attack. It is scarey but as a nursing student I highly suggest going to your doctor. A stress test could also be beneficial......If you doctor thinks your healthy and tries to send you away, specifically ask for those tests, but if you present yourself with your journal of your episodes, any health care professional should know to follow up...just in case....

I am glad that so many others are experiencing these issues too not sure why but it is comforting. I have already had all kinds of stress tests and they all come back negative. However I can be sitting still and here comes this sudden quick irregular feeling in my chest followed by shortness of breath for a quick faint moment and then a flourish of fear with cold sweat to the end of my fingers.

I am not sure what causes this but I have noticed that belching internally gets rid of the feeling and provides comfort.

My question to the other posters on here is how many of you think this might be all the wireless applications we are using now adays. I wonder if wireless internet, phones, cell phones, blue tooth, I just have to wonder what affect these might be having on folks hearts since so many have these palipitations but no signs of heart damage??

Just did this and it worked for me.

Some background. I have had exactly what OP is describing on and off for a few years. It lasts for a minute or so and stops. It very rarely happens, ie once every 4 to 6 months. I don't worry about it.

Today it happened and lasted for over 3 hours. I started to worry, but i didn't panic. I just debated whether to go to the hospital or not. Reading this site put my mind at rest a bit.

Then i found this. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Heart-Cardiology-964/2008/1/serious-heart-flutter-palpitation.htm

I tried it and lo and behold the fluttering stopped immediatley. Very bizzare.

The advice it gives is as follows, Quote:

If it continues more than 15 minutes, while your're still lying down, rub your eyes through your eyelids hard enough to hurt a little for about five seconds. If that fails to stop it, while still lying down, take a deep breath in and blow out hard but don't let the air out of your chest. Shut mouth and hold nose if necessary and bear down as if you wanted to move your bowels for about 5 or 7 seconds.

Hope it helps someone out there. Let me know.

I have this, it is related to my Mital Valve Prolapse. The doc. said it was nothing to worry about, and the coughing is your body's way to kick the heart beat back into a normal rthym. I had to have an ultrasound to detect the MVP, but some doctors can hear it with the stethoscope

Hi everyone.
I have the same thing as you all describe since I was about 15. My mum has it too, and has had it since she was in her early 20's.(so it may be hereditary as well...)
We have both had it checked by heart specialists and just as you all say, there seems to be no problem. We both also cough to get the heart to beat normally again.

We both get it especially when we are getting ill or have been ill, although I sometimes get it when I am active as well (like during a jog, and that is very difficult, as I have to stop until it goes away with the coughing. But it actually makes the jog very difficult after that, so it isn't just 'all fine' afterwards!)

I have recently started feeling a new feeling however. Just wanted to hear if anyone else is getting this. Sometimes at night when I am about to go to sleep or if I have woken up for a drink of water, etc, I feel like my heart slows and stops at times when i breathe. I know it sounds strange (and absolutely the opposite of what has happened in the past). With this new thing there is no heart fluttering, just almost a silence in my ears when my heart stops briefly during both the breathing in and out (only right at the end of the breath). I dont feel ill with it or anything, just strange and a bit confused by it.

Anyone had that?

Yes, I have the same problem. It happens a few times a day. I almost have it every night when I first lie down to sleep. It is scary. Six weeks ago, I was diagnosed with coronary artery disease. Three of my arteries were blocked. My cardiologist placed three stents on the arteries to keep the blood pass through. I have to take Plavix and aspirin 81 for one whole year to hin my blood. In addition, I have to return to the hospital every six months to check if it works. Yet, after this big procedure, I still have the same problem although I can breathe much better.

If you have high cholesterol, please do a stress test and ask for a catheterization afterward. Then, you'll will know if there is something with your heart or not. Don't wait until you have a heart attack.

TO ALL OF YOU THAT HAS THE SAME SYMPTOMS:
Please go to : WWW.MVPROLAPSE.COM
You have MVP. I have been seeing Dr. Watkins since 1997 and he is the only doctor that took me serious. I live in Fla and go to Alabama every year for my annual check up and tests.
I beg you, check out the site and read all you can about MVP. Five things from me to you that will change your life:
1. no sugar
2. no cho
3. no caffine
4. light exercise (walking) daily.
5. most important ! drink tons of water.
STRESS IS GAS ON THE FIRE WHEN IT COMES TO MVP. Don't let any doctor tell you that MVP is nothing to worry about, its not fatal but it can make you think you are dying or just crazy about all that is happening to you and your health.
good luck
ps: in 1995 I was sent home from hospital and told that I had MS....it was MVP. Took me 2 years of seeing 50 or so doctors before meeting Dr WATKINS.

I am so glad to find so many people with the exact same symptoms as me! I was thinking that it was going to be hard to describe what I have been feeling, but everyone described my feelings to a tee! I am going to try to take the last posting's advice and cut out all caffeine, sugars (not that I have that much), eat some bananas, and start a light exercise program. I have been having these "flutters" on and off for several years now. Just yesterday eve and on through today I have been having several "episodes" and usually it's just one and then I don't have another one for several months. I have been stressed out lately about money, my son, paying my Sept. rent on time, etc.....so that could be contributing to it. I am a 45-year-old female and probably about 20 pounds or so overweight. I thought about going to the ER last night, but I'm a single mom and didn't want to alarm my kids or didn't have anyone to watch them while I went. I'm on MediCal insurance too, so I don't know what doctor I would go to besides going to the ER.

If anyone has any suggestions and/or comments that would be helpful, please post for me!!

Crazy that you're posting on this because I very recently started noticing this. I cut out caffeine and I noticed how quickly my heart stopped fluttering when it used to flutter hard all the time. Thanks for the insight!!

OMG! I have this problem exactly. It is rare and I feel it maybe 1-3 times a year, but then sometimes I feel it 1-3 times a week during those 1-3 times a year (confusing i know).

I too get the feeling like my heart has missed a beat and then I feel a shiver up through both arms and a slight pressure in the middle of my chest like an air bubble is moving up my throat. A cough clears it as the original poster has mentioned.

As others have said, I too find it worse with things like too much coffee or tea (as was the case today). But I also noticed it happens if I get little sleep. For example, this week I have averaged about 6 hours a night in 5 days. If i get at least 7 or more a night I seem to feel better.

Yep, i too went through the ECG/EKG stuff all the way up through a cardiologist who had me do a stress test on the treadmill and all the experts said my heart is normal for my age (37). My GP said it was probably stress/acid refulx and that seems to be the case. I'm not happy that anyone else suffers from this, but I am happy to see I am not alone. People think I'm crazy when i describe it. :-)

Phil my mom also suffers from this (as do I , when I mentioned) and she told me that her doctor said it actually IS your heart missing a beat--but that's not abnormal! It turns out your heart does once in awhile. does that make sense?
