You need to have a stress test done. You probably have SVT (Supraventricular tachycardia) It is an easy fix. I just had the ablation surgery done 6 months ago, and I feel totally better. I use to have lots of anxiety because of my condition... and the surgery fixed everything. E-mail me if you have any questions.

Hi guys. Ive sat here for a while reading these and they have helped me feel a bit better. For the last five years I have had the same issues as most of you. I will get a sudden shortness of breath followed by some chest tightness. I usually just pound on my chest a little bit and it eventually goes away after two or three seconds. As time has gone on I notice that these spells dont last as long, but are more frequent. So I dont have three or four second periods of gasping...rather short half second periods. The crazy part is that when I feel for a pulse my heart will literally stop beating for a second. When it starts beating again the first beat is VERY hard...like i can feel it hit my chest hard. It scares the hell out of me honestly. And Ive been to the ER twice. Like many of your the doctors havent found anything. They say I have anxiety (which i probably do) and even panic attacks. I saw a cardiologist and he says its probably my esophagus spasming...but no esophagus spasms will stop my heart for almost five seconds. My cholesterol is good, and got better recently now that I have lost weight. My triglycerides are great even for a fat guy lol.

Also I have noticed that it gets worse right after I eat something. I went to sweet tomatoes tonight and ate pretty good, I did eat a piece of bread more than I usually allow and then bam....the spells came back. Its strange because I can ride my bike and have my heart going 145+ BPM for 40 minutes and not have a single spell. But ten minutes after it starts. Tomorrow im going back to see the cardiologist and telling him I want a monitor so he wont think im crazy anymore. Its so bad that even my girlfriend thinks im nuts...which makes me mad. Im glad I found this board. Its been good reading your guys' posts and easing my mind a little bit about how severe this is.

I'm a 26yr old male, healthy, 160lbs, I have had this issue on and off since I was 17, I was told in the past it was stress causing this.

Only happens when I am at a resting heartbeat, 72bpm or so, I get a sudden fluttering feeling from my heart and it also feels pounding, I can feel it if I touch my chest. It also causes an instant shortness of breath and a weird uncomfortable feeling in my upper airway, that feeling like you have to cough, so if I cough this whole episode stops and goes back to normal, but if I resist the urge to cough it will keep going.
Today is the first day in a long time since it has happened and just this morning it has happened about 4 times and still I have this feeling in my chest like the urge to cough.

I have not been stressed out recently, I get a good amount of exercise weekly as well as sleep. I'm concerned about this, but I know if I go to my doctor she will say its nothing since I cannot recreate what is happening in the doctors office.

Hey I have the same symptons; It usually feels like, real quick fluttering and when you cough it stops; but most of the time it makes me cough
Anyone have experience with this?

I'm healthy 33 years old, Yes I had the same problem since 14..,I used to feel something is blocking in lungs or heart. So if i cough everything goes back to normal...,i was told in 2004 this was due to Vitamin b deficiency.

To the 46 year old. Try going to a cardiologist. If you dont have insurance some will allow you to make payments on the account. Go see a pro about these subjects. I went to the ER twice and had them tell me it was nothing. Hope you get to feeling better

THANK YOU! I have had this problem (heart flutters, feel it in throat, need to cough and it stops)for a year or so and I was afraid to go to my dr. as I cannot predict when this will happen and he won't hear anything. I am going to try the vitamin B. If this doesn't work I may have to give up my coffee! I have been diagnosed with anemia, I haven't yet paid enough attention to whether it happens more when my iron levels are low. I have heard that low iron can cause heart rate to flux.

Vitamin B energizes a person, which increases the heart rate. The risk of irregular heartbeat increase with a quicker heart rate. The rest seems pretty sound advice :)

Vitamin B is used as an additive in energy drinks and should not be supplemented before bed, unless you want to stay up all night. :)

Good luck, everyone with the heart flutters (got them too)! :)

I use a sedative that seems to help when that occurs. It sedates me, reduces stress on the heart, mind and body. I use corvololum, which include phenobartibal and bromide I believe, as well as mint. But I DO NOT recommend using it. It is highly addictive and can be toxic. The only reason why I use it, is that it is available and it makes the heart beat weaker reducing the squeezing in the chest, difficulty breathing and and the stress on the heart. It does relax the entire body, sapping energy, but it creates a light, EVEN heartbeat with no discomfort.

The best thing to use during anxiety and stress and sedatives/barbiturates, etc. You want to DE-tense. Please don't energize yourself with B-vitamins. This gives more of a flight or fight response, which releases adrenaline and is a major stresser on the body. It uses up your energy reserves, etc.

But you guys may have something different than I do. Mine is affected by breathing. If I take shallow, quick breathes I can induce it anytime. But I can make it go away by slow, even breathing. Coughing creates an onset of irregular heartbeats in me. I think I may have something different, my apologies for butting in.
