I have been diagnosed recently with hemifacial spasm. I suffer from chronic spasms of right side of my face. I am still not sure what caused this condition. I am on prescribed medical treatment at the moment. I am worried because doctor said that this therapy is not always successful and that I might need surgery.

Hemifacial spasm affects muscles activated by the facial nerve. It can result from stimulation by a blood vessel lying too close to the nerve or may follow Bell's palsy due to incorrect regeneration of the facial nerve. This is an inflammation of the facial nerve resulting in temporary facial weakness. In mild cases, doctors may prescribe medications or recommend biofeedback training but when the symptoms are severe, surgical approach is needed.
