I have been working on my swimming technique for the past six months. I have managed to improve my time and speed. However, one thing that seems to elude me is proper breathing. I just cannot seem to get the hang of it. I don’t know what to do about my breathing problems when swim.

You are not alone in that. Many people who want to join competitive swimming or simply want to learn proper technique find difficult to master breathing patterns. It seems odd and awkward at the beginning but once you get the hang of it you will feel it more natural and will be able to see the advantages of such behavior. Maybe you should consult experienced coach about that.
