Hi, a friend of mine was recently diagnosed with grave's disease. This came as a surprise to me since this was the first time that I have ever heard of this kind of condition. She is under a therapy that involves some medicines. Also, she has been scheduled an appointment on which another option will be discussed-an operation. How does a doctor decide upon the treatment for grave's?

Hi, Grave's disease does not belong to a group of conditions that are life threatening. However, it can cause serious complications if it is left untreated. Grave's disease is an illness caused by immune system. It produces antibodies that influence the work of thyroid gland. As a result, this gland creates large amounts of a hormone thyroxin. This then results in increased rate of metabolism which can have serious effects on health. As for the treatment, it all depends on symptoms that occur. Beta blockers are almost always prescribed since they act on decreasing the levels of thyroxin. An operation is an option if Grave's disease affects eyes. Basically, the doctors prescribe therapy according to the symptoms that occur as a consequence of high thyroxin levels.
