I'm a 20-year-old female with a family history of several types of cancer. My ENT discovered a lump in my thyroid, and after running several tests and having all the results come back as "suspicious," he has decided to "play it safe" by removing my right lobe. I'm worried about weight gain after the procedure. I'm very happy with the way I look now, but I'm a full-time student, so regular exercise and healthy eating are extremely difficult for me, considering that I live on campus. How much weight should I expect to gain after the surgery? Is there any way to prevent this? (I don't mean to ask silly questions.)

You don't have to gain any weight at all. If your thyroid hormone level is low due to removal of your right thyroid lobe, your doctor will prescribe Synthroid (L-thyroxine sodium) that will bring your metabolism back to normal. I had known some people who actually had this operation, and they actually lost weight.
