I have been on paxil for just over 4 years. I've tried t get off 3 times and can't take the withdrawl. I have gained 40 pounds in those 4 years. I'm 5' 1", 51 years old and went from 120 pounds to 160 pounds. However, I recently read on these posts about taking Omega-3 and vitamin E. I started this 7 days ago and have lost 5 pounds already. If this continues life will be great! The paxil does work for me and if the weight comes off all is good :-D

Ok, so I will just add my experience. I had horrible anxiety and depression as a result of hormone and adrenal problems. I started Zoloft and within a few weeks, I was feeling so much better. But, in 6 months, I put on 60lbs. Then, I decided I had to get off of that and try something else, so I went on Wellbutrin and lost 25lbs, but also felt like I was losing my mind--couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, started having horrible anxiety and obsessive like thoughts and almost felt suicidal. Then, I switched to Paxil and I feel great, but I have put all of that 25lbs back on and then another 15lbs. So, all in all I have gained 75lbs. I want to get off Paxil, but when I tried (went down to 10mg), I started feeling some horrible depression and slight anxiety, so I went back to 20mg. I now weigh 300lbs FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE and am not getting any younger, I am 30. I want to get pregnant, so I need to get off of Paxil and lose over 100lbs. Seems so daunting and impossible. I work out regularly and eat very healthy food. I am trying everything....any suggestions!?! Thanks for listening!

I wish I understood why Paxil makes you gain weight! Oh, and I sweat constantly for the first month and still feel like I am always warmer than others. I have low thyroid and am still trying to balance that out, so I thought I would be cold, not hot...

Thank you all sooooo much. I wish all of you the best

Hi,
After Paxil for 8 + months I was told I had IBS, actually gained 5 lbs after a month of dieting & hard core excercise. Saw the GP & complained about the overall weigh gain gain of over 30lbs! He puts me on Prozac, came home read the blurbs NO way am I taking that stuff. 2nd day of cold turkey off all meds. The weight, sweats, happy "not here feelings" are not good. This weight gain has made me more depressed. Especially the bloated abdomen as I have always had a flat stomach.
So here I am obese, no sexual apetite, about to start a new job with no clothes that fit - thanks doctor for putting me in this miserable place - NOT!
To be honest after reading all you reports I am saddened by the fact that I may never be able to lose this weight. Tried to explain to my husband to bare with me whilst going off this stuff he couldn't even do that for a day.
So here I am & am having not the most positive thoughts, & to think I trusted my GP well we all know who the ***hole is don't we - me for trusting people that write scripts just to get us out the door.
Please tell me there is someone out there that has lost weight on after getting of these meds. Is there light at the end of this obesity tunnel??

Started looking up info on Aropax as my doctor prescribed this to assist me in coming off Paxil. Must say, was more horrified with the info on this than Paxil. Been on Paxil for 3 years. At my thinnest ever, but have been under tremendous stress, so I think had I not, maybe i too would have gained weight. Paxil has been great for me - still had the emotion - able to cry and feel, but just had it under control. The worst side effect for me is the lack of sexual desire. In a new relationship and still not in the mood. Anyway, I am considering going to see a homeopath to see what he suggests, but I need to come off this drug like now. If you have any suggestions on how to come off, please let me know. Maybe, going cold turkey and just dealing with it?

I lost weight on Paxil, but then I'm eating less and drinking more water to purposefully lose weight. I just find it easier to do on Paxil. If you're still pigging out even on Paxil, of course you'll gain weight.

Paxil was horrible for me. I went from a size eight to a size 18. I exercised more. Now that I am off paxil I am a size eight.

To the person who talked about going off of paxil cold turkey. NOT a good idea. Talk to your doctor first. That does not work. If you're on a high dose, there could be awful side effects. Even weaning off the drug slowly is hard. You will have side effects, but you definitely don't want to go cold turkey. I've been on paxil now for over a year and I tried to get off of it once. Had dizziness, shortness of breath, etc. Then, once the side effects went away, I went back to being my grumpy, snippy old self and decided to go back on it. I just like who I am better when I'm on it.

I have just been prescribed Paxil 10mg for anxiety disorder yesterday. The doctor didn't tell me about what sounds like a strong potential for weight gain! I took my 1st dose last night but now after doing searches on the internet and the drug guide about Paxil, I don't want to take this medication tonight. I might not even take this medication at all, I'll tell the doctor that I don't want this Paxil.

Isn't there some other medication which will help me with anxiety and panic attacks? Jeez, this is making me even more anxious. I have a tendency to gain weight easily :-(   I gained 30 pounds from oral contraceptives and it took me a year to lose that weight.

Trey - I am 46 years old. I was on Paxil 10 mg (smallest dosage) from March 2010 to October 2010. I went on it due to panic attacks at work caused by tremendous amounts of stress. Before taking the drug, one particular panic attack caused me to have a mini seizure so I knew I needed help. I had no clue that weight LOSS.. Yes weight LOSS!! Was a side effect in some people. I lost 21 lbs while on it. I wasn't heavy to begin with; 187 lbs at 5 foot 11 inches tall.

To give you a clear perspective; before going on Paxil, the last time I was under 170 lbs, I was 20 years old.

Did Paxil help me? Yes, the primary help that Paxil gave me was it took the edge off. I no longer had panic attacks and my life long nail biting habit stopped completely. It's now March 17, 2012 and I've been off Paxil since October 2010 and I'm still able to control my stress and I still don't bite my nails. As for stabilizing my weight, well that's a different story. After I stopped taking Paxil, I'm heavier than ever; 194lbs, but that's ok, I'm back doing martial arts after a 25 year hiatus and working on the weight naturally. A part of me wants to go back on Paxil just for the weight loss benefit, but my conscience says "No, don't be stupid". I'm glad I was able to share my experience.

Thank you and be well,  Adam

That's true. I was on 10mg of Paxil for 8 months and I was smart weaning off it. This was my process: I cut the 10 mg pill into quarters and took 3/4's of the pill for 2 weeks; then every 2 weeks after I took another 1/4 of the pill off. I was so scared about the potential side effects of coming off of it that I even took a sliver of the pill, probably an eighth of the pill for at least a week. Well it worked for me; no side effects. I'm glad I was able to share. Thank you and be well, Adam

hi ellen.
sorry for all the problems you had on prozac, but did you consider the possibility that by taking prozac it set off a manic epispode. From what you are describing that is what it sounds like. Sometimes physicans don't delve to deep into a persons history & they prescribe unwittingly to those who are undiagnosed bipolar patients. And to futher deepen the conundrum, bipolar patients aren't the best at complying w/ their meds. Wish you the best...

I don't feel that medication make you gain weight.  It stands to reason that if you are experiencing more hunger, then you should just eat healthy; get up and get motivated to work out or do something active.  I take this medication before I go to bed.  I have not experienced any weight gain whatsoever.  The only way it can attack your metabolism is if you allow yourself to become lazy, eat the wrong foods, and get no physical activity; just walking even...something.  I have myself trained to eat three light meals a day and then I have two nutritious snacks midmorning and midafternoon in addition to my half-hour walk everyday.
