You need to be open and honest with him, but not too straight-foward. Ease your way into the conversation. But don't mistaken my advice. Some people get scared of losing friendship over confessions as such. If you feel that this relationship could carry into something serious then go for it! If he cannot return your feelings then don't worry. Things may be a bit awkward at first, but just stay the way you are and keep trying to win his heart.
I confessed to my boyfriend in high school, and he rejected me the first two times I asked him out! Things got really awkward between us for a few days but soon went back to normal as we conversed with normal conversations and interaction. I don't know when he soon started liking me back but he asked me out two months later and we've been together ever since.
