Hi all... At the start of January this year I had a hydrocele operation... After my op everything looked to be going fine until I visited my go and he became concerned it had failed ( this was 2 weeks after my op) he wanted me to check back in 4 weeks and has confirmed the operation has failed. I already knew this due to my testicle becoming massive again... But this time it feels different .... Its harder and causes me pain.... I'm bow awaiting an emergency rerefferal to my hospital but I'm looking for some advice in the mean time... Its become that bad I'm struggling to get an erection. Do you think the best course of action would be to have the testicle removed??

I would not recommend asking to have the testicle removed. If this is a recurring hydrocele, I'd recommend getting a physical examination and an ultrasound first to confirm it. Then, I'd ask the surgeon about a hydrocelectomy or at least draining it through fine needle aspiration, if to obtain some temporary relief. Wear scrotal support and loose-fitting pants; try to not to bear down or strain from lifting heavy objects.

You're struggling to get an erection because you're freaked out by this. Removing the testicle will not solve this problem.

I've had one operation already due to the fact the original hydrocele was massive.... I can't afford to have a load of time off work.. 5 weeks after the first operation... Thing is I just want to have it sorted... Aspiration would most probably end in recurrence from what I've read ... Im just very unsure

I'd be unsure about it myself, which is why I try to be very conservative in thinking of ways to deal with this problem.

From what I understand of the writing about hydroceles, removing the testicle would not solve the problem of a hydrocele or sac that builds up fluid/edema coming from the lower abdomen area (i.e., I'd think you would still have a hydrocele without the testicle). I suggested aspiration to provide temporary relief until you can get the surgery. As far as time off work goes, you're talking about removing part of an organ in hopes you might get better - and the recuperation time is probably gonna be the same.

I'd say that's just as extreme of a gamble. At worst, I'd try to wait it out until I can have more time off work, which is why, again, I'd try to have the swelling drained one or two more times before the surgery. However, make sure to go over this with your doctor and surgeon in detail. They may have other options to offer and should be able to explain things better than I ever could.
