I'm 61 years old.   Fourteen months ago I had double inguinal hernia surgery.  As a result, I came out with two hydroceles and very large testicles, which was confirmed by an ultrasound. I was not going to have corrective surgery, but my situation has changed.  Six weeks ago I was involved in a car accident.  Two days later, my right testicle had increased in size quite a lot.  It was the smaller of the two after I developed the hydroceles but now is twice the size of the left one and is very hard.  I had another ultrasound this morning and go back to the urologist next wednesday to discuss sergery. I'm thinking about having the hardened testicle removed because I'm afraid to keep it because I think there is a chance it might not return to normal and it's just too large to live with. Would appriciate any advice anyone has.  Right now I'm very anxious and very stressed about this!  Thanks

Did the urologist find out what it was and what caused the testicle to enlargen? I was thinking maybe the hydrocele got bigger and you could have a hydrocelectomy.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry it has taken so long for me to respond. The Urologist just tells me that he thinks it feels "tense". I asked him what he meant by this and never could get him to define what he meant by "tense". Also, I've given both sides the light test. The left side, which is the smaller side, will allow the light to show through. The right side will not. He tells me that it probably has had some bleeding from the auto accident. I am scheduled to have surgery next Tuesday, June 3rd to repair both sides. Thank you!

Hmm. I wonder if this is what is referred to as a "hematocele"... a collection of blood in the scrotum or around the outside of the testicle. Here is a quote from an article in a medical journal:

============================================================

J Urol. 1986 Dec;136(6):1217-8. Traumatic hematocele: association with rupture of the testicle. Vaccaro JA, Davis R, Belville WD, Kiesling VJ.Abstract

Ten patients with hematoceles associated with blunt trauma have been seen during the last 4 years. In 80 per cent of the cases the hematocele was caused by rupture of the testicle. Prompt early exploration, adequate débridement, primary repair of the tunical laceration and Penrose drainage resulted in a salvage rate of 75 per cent.

Thanks so much for your response and for this information. I had surgery on Tuesday of this week. The surgeon repaired the hydrocele on the left but decided it was best to remove the right testicle. I am good with his decision because I feel sure that it would continue to give me problems. I believe I can live with this much better than having to have another surgery in the future to have it removed. I have a friend that has had two surgeries on one testicle and is now considering having it removed because of constant pain. I've been dealing with hernias and hydroceles for about 1 1/2 years and right now I'm just looking forward to recovering from this last operation and getting my life back. I do highly recommend to anyone that is considering having this type of surgery to have a good urologist to perform the procedure instead of a general surgeon. I feel very good about the way the surgery went and the decision he made concerning my situation. I wish the best to all men having to deal with hydroceles. They can surely make life difficult!

Was he able to tell you what caused the right testicle to get that way? Also, what is the recovery time he estimated for you?

The right testicle was damaged in an auto accident after the hydroceles had developed. Right now, this is the side that is giving me the most pain, bruising, and swelling. I would have thought the left side where that hydrocele was repaired, would have been the most severe. The surgeon is telling me about 6 weeks for recovery. Right now, i'm just over a week and I guess I'm doing alright, except for the pain and much swelling on my right side. I ran out of the pain med before I ran out of pain!
