I was told I had hypothyroid last August 2009. I'm using Levitirion and have lost weight, I had all the regular symptoms and they have been clearing up slowyly my hair which had became like straw has recovered and grown, my acne has cleared up but I still feel the cold and pain in my joints, they swelling in my hands, feet, face and my tongue have returned to the no swelling me, my skin feels better and best of all I'm not moody anymore, I'm 35 and thought I was in some early menopause stage.... In regard to the weight lose, my endo who's a (professor in endoctrinolgy) gave me extra meds to support the high levels of Trig and Cholestrol in me. My body is getting retaining water because theres just to my salt in my bloodstream so to counter this I have been given Aldactone for the water retention and Secalip for my Trig and Cholestrol which have gone down so now I have been switched to Zocor because my cholestrol needs a bit more work, once there at a safe level I'II be of the cholestrol meds and will have to continue to excercise and eat right because its unsafe to use these meds for a lifetime. I have read alot about people saying they drink water and do excercise well maybe your retaining water as well. I have been walking for 1 hour per day and have lost 12kg from 86kg now.74kg. and when I do get sleepy or cant be bothered doing anything I do a lap around the block instead of lazying around or going to sleep.

the only meds I'II be on in 1 month is Levitiron = thryroid med, Aldacton=to keep salt levels low and get rid of water retention.

I was diagnosed with a hypothyroid 4yrs ago and just before that I had gained a good 35-40lbs. As soon as I was diagnosed I started to eat healthy and workout everyday (at least 30 mins of intense cardio everyday and weight lifting at least 3 times a week) it took about a good year to lose the weight, but I did. You just need to keep up the motivation and positive thinking and remember that weight loss is not something that happens fast, or that is supposed to happen fast. Always keep active and eat right, eating right is not hard, its mostly common sense. If you do not do these things you will see no changes.

Hey,
I'm 40 yrs old 5 boys. Just had my son in March 2010. I have been taking levoxyl 50mg. My hair is falling out like someone pulled it and a ton of it falls out in the shower daily. I save it and it's like a wig. I have been losing this kind of hair for 5 months now. Not only am I hypo thyroid, and gaining weight. The meds also don't work for weight loss. It's very depressing that the hair loss won't stop. I just went for my blood work again the other day. Funny thing is I do check this often and it always comes back normal. So upsetting when I'm still gaining weight, losing hair, tired, carpal tunnel is acting up, and I am told I'm normal.

I was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer a few months ago. I had a total thyroidectomy and lymphnodes removed. Then I had the RAI treatment. Shortly before I started the treatment I was placed on Levoxly. I was tired and gaining weight and didn't feel good. The doctor said that my levels looked good. Till a few weeks ago I continued to take Levoxly and put on a 13 pds in 3 months. I was dieting and exercising like crazy. A few weeks ago I called the doctor and told them I didn't want to take Levoxly because I had done some research online and found that it can cause weight gain, fatigue and headaches, which I had all of them. Ever since I've been off the Levoxly I have lost 4 pds and am feeling all around better. I don't know if this would be the case for some of you, but check into it. I was put on Synthroid to replace the Levoxly. I am also taking Cytomel along with the Synthroid. I was taking the Cytomel with the Levoxly also, but I think the Levoxly was my problem.

I thought i would share my story and current status on this subject, i will also keep everyone updated..

i am 17 years old, when i was young my parents said i went from really active, to tired, and weak.. i started to gain weight out of no where.. i would go out in 2 thousand acres of land, and spend all day out roaming the land with my brother, cutting trees down, catching animal, jumping from bails of hay, all kinds of active things! but my weight was slowly rising, i only ate at breakfast, lunch at school, and dinner! i drank water from the tap and water hose. i was out all day, everyday and i wasnt losing any weight, i was slowly rising(maybe because i was so active at the time, and wasnt taking much in, it didnt show.) but my mothers friend, went from 400lbs to 120lbs when she was put on her thyroid medicine, she noticed how i would lose my breath easy and my weight gain, she told my mother to have my thyroid checked, and that she went from 400lbs to 120lbs and she ate 3 doughnuts and eggs every morning! (seriously though, thats alot for a small [like 4"10] woman to eat, just for breakfast, though she would walk miles every morning too.)

So my mother took to get me checked, but the doctors refused, saying that it wasnt my thyroid, i wasnt active enough and needed to eat less, and said that doing the tests would hurt me to much, to be worth a hunch.. well we moved states when i was 11, and i really let myself go, i gained roughly 40-60lbs in such a short time, and i was out riding bikes almost all day with my cousin, through town, jumping jumps, all kinds of things, but i was still gaining weight above 200lbs now.. then i got into gaming, in like 2007 maybe? a bit before Halo 3 came out, if any of you know it (mind you i didnt play alot before halo 3) and i went to 270-280lbs, when i went to the doctor 2 weeks before my birthday,(april 14th) and my doctor put me on diet medicine and told me to excersize 15 minutes a day, just walk for 15 minutes. so i continued to play games , and walked and jogged a bit (not faithfully, and at little.) so 2 weeks later i go back to the doctor, and BAM, in 2 weeks i gained 50lbs!!! you all are saying 80lbs in months, i gained 50 in weeks, and thats with cutting back a bit, and running more than normal! the doctor looked at me and my mother wide eyed, he didnt believe it either.. so he checked my thyroid and then put me on levothyroixn(or whatever the spelling is) he said the 50lbs was water weight, but the funny thing is when i went to the specialist, he said it wasnt serious, that hypothyroidism is common, and mine wasnt very serious.. (by the way, i have plateau'd at around 330-340) we went back again, and he checked my thyroid again, ran more tests (this happened a total of 3 times from the specialist) and he evidently found something, and raised my dose (im almost positive he found something, because when we came in my mother confronted him asking how mine could be serious, yet me gaining so much weight out of no where. after testing he raised my dose and made excuses without looking at me, or my mother.) and now apparently im fluxuating, i stay in the 300's but everyone says i lost alot of weight randomly, (taking my medicine, drinking water, and cutting back food) to be completely honest i dont know how, i have taken my medicine faithfully for max 1 month, and its said to take atleast 1 1/2 month for its to start to work.. so i cant really see that being the reason for me losing weight like people say i have (saying that they havent been lying to me, lol but my mother is extremely blunt, nothing hidden, nothing sugar coated.. which is a good way to raise a child in my opinion, it makes the realization of the hardships in life, easier to handle) but i know water weight is a huge problem that comes with hypothyroidism, how you can counter water weight, is stop your sodium intake, and drink alot more water,i would imagine most of you could drop 50lbs easy, and quickly if you just cut out salts, and drink only water.. no cokes, sweet tea, things like that.. i dont know if this will help everyone, i cant pin which helped me, if it was cutting back food, drinking less soft drinks and more water, or my medicine, but i know at one point not to long ago, i had trimmed a bit.. ohhh and i also worked out a bit, my step dad was a fitness freak at one point and so we have alot of weight equipment, so i would do his long 30 minutes to 1 hour sometimes longer.. i would do that every monday and friday (there is a wednesday, leg workout, but i dislocated my knee and i couldnt do the workout.) so that would probably help as well.

ALSO! is it hard for everyone to keep up with their medicine? i find it hard to take regularly, the conditions are strict, the eating part isnt really a problem, but timing it to the dot everyday, and not being able to mess up but by a few minutes, just makes it hard for me.

I have been hypo thyroid for 25 years. 3 years ago they switched me to the generic 'TO SAVE MONEY'. WELL in 3 days I took the CRAPY GENERIC BACK and insisted on the NAME BRAND. Seems the generic does NOT work as well, has nasty side effects from the fillers. Hope you like ulcers in your mouth and having your hair fall out! Per my 25 year use of my pharmacist who know pills better than doctors do, the generic does NOT ncome in as many strengths, and have a HIGH rejection rate by the patients, if they are savy enough to listen to their bodies. You will need 4-5 thyroid test per year on the generic since it does NOT work as well and the name brand. Had to fight the Tricare for Life, which is the over 65 Military's secondary ins, and it is the second arm of Medicare that pays for meds. Express Scripts is the re-emburser. for TF:L, BC/BS  and THEY have a beef with the makers of Synthroid, and do NOT want to pay for it. Took a year and involving my US Senator, to force them to 'approve' the NAME BRAND. There is only about a $5 difference in the 2. Which they lose in forcing you onto the generic, is made up for the extra testing. While using the NAME BRAND you only need testing twice a year. you may need more than 4-5 labs depending on how badly the GENERIC works. Generics are NOT always the equal of the name brand! Most are not an issue, but for the Thyroid it is crucial. And watch your IODINE intake, The Thyroid requires it to help it function. The Thyroid is the MASTER gland of your Endocrine system, and it controls most hormone issues in your body. It is a micro-nutrient. Processed food and Sea salt do NOT contain Iodine, It cost no more to buy than jeiodized brand and you get it at your local grocery store. And be aware that the foods rich in Iodine are on the NO list for those who have to watch their Cholesterol, or sodium/salt intake for Blood Pressure or Menier's disease, AKA "glaucoma of the ear" The 2 diets CLASH big time. And your thyroid pays the price of inadequate IODINE.  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

hie guys. I see we are all in the same boat here. I'm a white 56 year old white south african female with hypothyroidism. My gp put me on Tetroxin and Eltroxin and also the hormone therapy. I was diagnosed a year ago. At the time i could hardly walk or do anything. One of the doctors i saw thought i had polymyalgia which i tend to agree with as i had all the symtoms of it. However since being on this medication i have lost 4 kgs but its tough work as im not young. I run 5 kms a day 6 days a week, eat 1300 calories a day. I have to say that after taking the meds i started to grt better but the weight is hard work. My encourgement to all of you out there is do the best you can, dont give up trying and be as healthy as you can. I'm so grateful that i can now run and walk without the pain i had a year ago. It isnt always about weighloss but about being well. Dont compare yourselves to others either.  When ourbodies become diseased beyond our control, we have to just be the best we can be and be grateful for just today. Its all about one day at a time. I too would love to have my size 32 body back with the ability to run comrades again and if i get there great but if not well im grateful for what i have. To all of you struggling out there take care and dont be so hard on yourself.

I too suffer from hypothyroid which tends to go up and down. I try to get tested every six months to see if my levoxyl has to be adjusted. I've tried every diet and also exercise but nothing seemed to help until I started taking the 100% natural green coffee bean extract in pill form. I had seen it advertised on the Dr. Oz show and thought I'd give it a try. The weight is coming off slowly but at least I feel I'm seeing some progress. I checked with my doctor and he said it was fine to take since it doesn't have any side effects. I recommend this to anyone who has problems with a slow metabolism.

I have had hypothroidism for over 20 years and have never experienced any weight loss from taking synthroid or the generic brand, but it is different for everyone. Good luck!

I had my para thyroid removed due to an over abundance of calcium in my body, turns out there was a tumor on that thyroid, I was loosing hair, gaining weight and my moods were crazy, went in had the surgery and within a week felt alot better, I was put on levoxyl of course for the rest of my life and was still gaining weight, I went in for blood work and she told me it was a little low so she increased my levoxyl dose from 110 to 112 not much I know however within 1 month i began dropping weight like crazy, I went from 137 (im 5"2) to 121 within 2 months, I am happy with my now weight andhope I dont continue to loose, 115 will be ok but anything lest then that will suck, just wanted some of you to no poss reasons for weight gain and hair loss.
